Hi

From Le Harve I have noticed a new bit of motorway [avoiding all the roundabouts]to Le Mans ...It is quite a drive ,is it a long way round?

Sorry I hav`nt seen a map I was just wondering...Also thank god they have finaly opened the Tours to Pointers motorway that saves my some right time...

Dandaz, I think you are refering to the A28 this takes you from Le Harve down to Le Mans and is the ideal route to take if you are going to the Royan area, from Calais/Le Harve. Although I believe this is a Toll Road, it save you a lot a time on your journey and is an easier drive traffic wise, hope this helps,

best regards, Martin

the A28 yes a toll road runs from rouan to tours joing the A10 a mere 385 klms and well worth the trip at a small cost of 22 euros for the full length car only add 50% for the caravan so about 33/35 euros

i use this road all the time a great crusing road

Thanks for the info folks ........will be doing the run in June...  Rouen  to La Roche sur Yon for the first time    415km  and toll charges of  E 29.80  about £20 seems a reasonable  charge .

I looked at it and decided for the half hour extra driving - the additional cost of (for us) 43 euros - we tow a caravan - in comparison to our usual route Le Havre to the Vendee (Coex) via Avranches etc was OTT - 86 round trip- about  £60 - sorry but that would buy us the extra fuel and a meal..... and we have plenty of time to get there, landing as we do at 7.30 am.

It just crossed my mind I need to know about this new motorway for my summer hols. I also need a new book of the road, as my Michelin France 2001 is out of date and falling to bits. Have any of the map books been updated with this new road (and the one at Boulogne)?
Thanks

Liz

You can get the same thing by going direct to www.mappy.com

My 2005 French atlas. AA I think has the new stretches as on going ie broken blue lines so maybe they are now in the latest atlas.

Thanks folks, I always print out an itinerary from mappy or multimap or the AA etc, but call me old fashioned but I really like to have a book of the road with me. For whacking the driver with, if for no other reason

As a side issue, please tell me why it is that we English seem quite happy to stump up quite lumpy toll charges when abroad, but resent it greatly in our own country?

Is it that we don't mind paying for high quality roads on the continent against the crap ones in our country? I just find the whole principle a bit of a paradox.

I for one resent having to pay £2.00 each way to take my outfit via the Dartford crossing, when for the sake of a few sets of traffic lights I can cross the same river for nothing via the Blackwall Tunnel.

Funny old world...........

Vic

I willingly pay the £3.00 it costs to use the M6 Birmingham bypass. I think its worth every penny. If tolls reduce traffic in the way it does in France then I will happily pay them but I really resent stumping up £1.30 for the Mersey tunnel, largely because they are forever closing 2 lanes of it which causes huge traffic jams with only 1 lane in each direction. They say it is for maintenance but it is thought to be to save money manning and running the extra lanes.

Carol

About 300 mile drive in the uk ....with hardly any traffic to bother with .on smooth roads ...with regular stop off points .  providing   clean toilet facilities ..garden lay out /shaded pic-nic areas   some with BBQ for you to use if you want....and not .having to fight over getting one as they are never crowded ......Give me that for a run from the south of England to the North ......I will stump up £20 everytime .  trouble is in this country there is no room left to build  motorways like them ......and when one is proposed ...you can bet your life there will be a  buebell. a toad . or a butterfly that will be in the way so stop it ......or   a   " Swampy  "  and his mates up a tree ....
