Hi
Now that the world cup is nearly on us , I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to watch or listen to the world cup. We are thinging of bringing the little portable TV with a booter powered antenna.

If your going to France forget it. There TV system is Secam ours is PAL a TV from here will not work as far as I know.

If someone knows different I'm sure they will let us know.

The only way to watch would be via Satalite or an excuse to find a bar with BIG SCREEN TV!

Radio is much easier get yourself a Shortwave or in some parts of France Long Wave would work to listen to English broadcasts. On Shortwave you are not very likley to find english live commentary of matches but you will find the results.

As has been mentioned you'll need a nuclear power plant and lead suit to boost the UK signal enough to watch on your non secam TV. You can get PAL/Secam TV but there are very expensive - see Towsure for examples.

Go to a French bar and watch the footy drinking cool beer (ideally Smithwicks, but very difficult to find) and Pastis.

We are going to France on the 13th June and returning on 7th July. we watch all of the matches in the club on the site, the atmosphere is brilliant. One year the club put the French match on instead of the English match and about 20 people immediately left. We found a Dutch couple who had the English match on with the tv in the caravan doorway,as long as you took your own beer and seat everybody was welcome. All the other England matches were watch at the same van, It was much better than going to the club. I have got to say the club was NOT owned by the site, needless to say the club lost a lot of money for being stupid.

When in Rome A-Vanman?

After a few glasses the football will seem less important anyway.

The thing to do is go digital. We're thinking of taking a laptop and a tiny USB digibox this year (but not for the footie). Like this: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/94486

If it's footie you're after and the commentary doesn't matter you're bound to find most of the matches somewhere.

Liz
P.S. there were 2 whole threads about this earlier in the year. It got quite detailed at one point.

I'm affraid that the USB Digital adaptor you mention is for Freeview. ie UK TV & there is no way you will recieve that in France. Litteraly the only way to watch UK TV in France is with a Satelite system.

That is for terrestrial digital TV. Not even sure if the French even have it but it will almost certainly also be SECAM format not PAL. That adaptor does not memtion what format it recieves but as it's aimed at UK market then it will defanatley be PAL doubt for that price it will do any of the other formats.

Not according to the manual, Paul. You get the French equivalent of Freeview in France. And as it's digital the dreaded PAL and Secam probs are no more:-)
Here's what Freecom says it receives:
http://www. freecomdemo.com/images/dvb_programs_overview.pdf

and here's the spec: freecom.com/ecproduct_detail.asp?ID=2234
It does European format teletext (not UK sadly), so I don't think it's primarily for the UK market at all.

Anyway, the old thread was full of people waaay more technical than me... you could look it up if you want more info.

Campers here have bought a full terrestrial TV set up from a local Lidl for €30, including a dish in a suitcase. It picks up all the French freeviews and a couple of 'European' ones like Eurosport etc. So if you want it for the footy, and don't want the expense of buying seperate UK Digi stuff, then maybe that's the way to do it?

Wow! You can't really beat that, can you. But what are you site-owners going to do with a pile of tellies at the end of the season? Build an installation?
