I'm trying to find a good way of searching on the web for French campsites... and am finding I'm suffering from information overload.
I want to be able to search by number of pitches (I want small), as well as geographically. I'd q like to find tenting campistes only (is that possible?!). Also - if poss - to be able to say I want a swimming pool.
Am I being overly ambitious?! thanksx
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
I quite like this site: http://www.camping-france.com/ang/index.html
because it leads you through to the campsite's own website.
Sites with a pool will usually be 3-star, but 3-stars mostly won't be tent-only, so that could be a bit of a problem, depends what you're looking for.
A lot of municipal campsites are next to the town pool. There's one at Santenay les Beaune that's next to the pool and the casino! http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=5426
Also the Camping Municipal Bellevue at Chevanceaux in Charente Maritime. Lovely campsite (20 pitches), it does indeed have a pretty view and is right next door to the pool but, my is it a sleepy little village!
This one's just a short drive from the channel ports, in the Somme for WW1 tourism and has an outdoor heated pool from June 1st onwards: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=5429
There's quite a good search on the Alan Rogers website and the sites will be good, but not necessarily La F
Maybe we could help you more if we knew what you had in mind. Touring with a tiny tent & a bike & wanting a swim at the end of the day? A family holiday with tiny toddlers who you don't want kept up all night by the disco? Getting away from other Brits (heaven forfend!)?
And where you fancy going, too.
www.guideweb.com for Provence and the Ardeche and there is one called camping Dordogne or Dordogne camping. Cant remember which. If you have a department in mind google it and you get lots of hits.
If you have a particular city or town in mind then google that and you may come up with an official website showing the municipal campground. These are often very good quality and value but there is no official list.

I visited loads of two and 3-start sites. Never experienced a tents-only site. The French simply don't mind.
But, you normally will not find hard standings. With caravan one just pitches on the grass pitches. If that is a bit soft': 'bad luck' (actually for the site-owners, as his pitches are easily damaged on departure, but they seem to feel the other way around).
You probably did not see many caravans on those sites as they usually have low amperage EHU, and many campers want more. So in the selection process those caravanners often choose other campsites.
