I have a tomtom 500 with speed camera locations on it. would it be illegal to use this in France as it is i believe illegal to use radar trap detection equipment ?

I have heard that they will confiscate things like Road Angel, even if its in your boot, but I dont know about Sat Nav with built in speed camera locations. I dont see why they should as all the road atlases have speed camera locations in them this year and Tom Tom cant detect the mobile radar traps like Road Angel.

You are fine to use your tom tom in France.

It is only active detectors that are banned. The tom tom only tells you where they are on a map. ie it will still tell you it's there even if some kind soul went and chopped it down the day before. But an active detector will tell you nothing if there is no camera

Hope that makes sense.

Have you got the French speed camera poi file? the one from gpspassion is their version of the uk's pocketgps camera database. ie gpspassion have the most complete version for france

I'm sure you will be fine. I hope so as I am taking my tom tom to France in August and I have camera database on mine too.

I will need mine in France too as no doubt the Zen Navigator sitting next to me will be asleep. & you can see how that would work at 110kph in the dark on the wrong side of the road. I did buy a map but tom tom virtually agrees with the route I picked out anyway. At least I can talk to the voice in the box if no one else...lol

ive always used the atlas and planned out my route in advance, printed it out and got one of the lads to keep us right. cant rely on our lass who has no sense of direction and her map reading skills are zero !!!

as we arent towing this year might let her drive abit over there then i can navigate if i stay awake long enough..lol

Are we vsure about this??  Have a look at the thread "You have been Warned" which refers to a letter in the Caravan Club Magazine.  Surely the purpose of having Camera POI's is to detect "active" cameras so doesnt it become an "active detector"??

Perhaps La Touche or someone can give us chapter and verse on this as I don't particularly want my TOMTOM confiscated!

Just copied this from a site (UKSpeedTraps-2006)

European countries which have outlawed camera detectors, include France, Belgium, Greece, Austria, Turkey, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Ireland and Norway. In Luxembourg the maximum penalty is a prison sentence of between eight days and three years. The Republic of Ireland also deals harshly with offenders and a six-month prison sentence is possible

Dunno about chapter & verse, but we've had no end of vvisitors here this year so far that have used TomTom. They're sold here in France with the same uploads as available in the UK.

Oh, and we've just been into Saumur to the Intersport (Niall's off to Stade de France today to watch France v Mexico and needed a French footy top!) where they're selling the new 'Ignis' French road maps. Complete with speed camera locations! So are the gendarmes gonna jail you for using a road map too?

I seriously wouldn't worry about this Jon. Just enjoy your holiday with Stu & Jo.

One of the guys on our recent trip had sat nav on his bike, after two tours of St. Omer and then a few redirections, culminating in him turning left at a roundabout in Abbeville when all the road signs pointed straight ahead, we told him to shut the thing off (but not so politely) and rely on good old fashioned map navigating and reading the road.

Highside,  I'm with you on this one, we rode all round eastern Europe just using map's, ok so you get a bit lost now & again but that's all part of the fun. It was the greatest 3 week's riding i've ever experienced, & to top it all sitting in the sun after along day, outside a little country hotel supping genuine Cechkoslovakian budweiser on draught at just 26p a litre well that's just heaven isn't it!!!!
