Can someone jog my memory, we now have the new type passport for our dog, do we need any paperwork to enter and leave this country or does the passport suffice.

Like you we are taking our dog to France on the new passport for the first time.  We are going to take his normal vaccination record card, the rabies blood serum cert and his chip registration document "just in case"!  Belt and braces or what???

You won't need any paperwork apart from the pet passport to leave the UK, but you will need the dog treated for ticks and worms by a vet before you can return to the UK, and that has to be recorded in the passport itself. This is closely scrutinised at the port of re-entry. We have never been asked for any other paperwork, though there did use to be a form you had to sign to say the dog had not visited a country not covered by the passport scheme. This seems to have fallen out of use.
