our first trip to france with a caravan is coming up. Living in Scotland and having three young kids we usually travel through the night. Without a caravan we would stop in Maidstone services for a few hours, sleep and then get the ferry over around 08.00.
Having the luxury of a real bed, now is it ok to drop the legs and sleep at dover or is it better to cross and sleep at calais port for a few hours before heading south?
Are you allowed to drop legs at the port and use the gas?
if we are sleeping in the van should we also lower the jockey wheel?

I think you could have a difficulty at Dover as there is no where to park in the actual port although some suggest using the parking on the seafront. Calais does have a large parking area which is well used by caravanners so that might be a better bet. The trouble with the Maidstone Services at junction 8 on the M20 that despite having a dedicated area for caravans the space is often full of other vehicles but I suppose you could always look in.
I think I'm right in saying that Maidstone services has a two hour limit before they start charging. The caravan are is often full of trucks and cars - ho hum. There is nowhere at dover port itself though you can possibly sleep on the seafront although alot of trucks often have the same idea and you could be disturbed by them. With regards to France I would seriously avoid sleeping in Calais - I've heard many a tale from truck drivers trying to get some kip and been disturbed by people trying to break into their trucks with a crowbar to burst the locks open. A lot of asylum seekers are in the Calais area waiting to jump the ferries and it seems that the finger of suspicion points at them alot with regards to this sort of stuff. I would suggest using the CC site at Black Horse Farm at Folkestone - you'll get a good nights kip as well as the facilities.

Theres a large carpark in the centre of Dover that we tried to get a few hours shut eye after traveling thoughout the night, but it was like trying to sleep in the middle of a race track due to 100s of vehicles leaving the port every 30mins.
we had parked up at 4am and at 5.30 said stuff it! drove into the port 5hours early and got put on the next ferry just after 6am.
You have hell of a long way to travel i would seriouly consider an proper overnighter on a site rather than just trying to grab a few hours or a least share the driving.
If you choose to cross and then sleep you can take your pick of 'Aires', either on the port at Calais (no facilities) or half an hour down the autoroute and you can use the service station showers in the morning (free of charge, but you hand in your car keys for the shower cubicles keys). That way you can set off early morning, and get a good way into France the following day - and have croissants for breakfast!!!! As said, just make sure you choose a well-lit, well used Aire (not just the picnic areas)!!

There are Facilities at Calais docks Toilets and free hot showers are in the terminal building available 24 hours a day. We usually use them on our return journey when spending the night on the docks before a breakfast time crossing.
We have stayed several times in the Tesco car park in Dover, just before you go down the big hill to the docks. They are fine with people getting a few hours sleep, it is well lit, there is a petrol station, and i find it only fair to buy a few bits from them to say thank you !! I have seen other motorhomes & caravans parked here - it is a large car park and very quiet in the middle of the night. It is a 24 hour shop. We have also stopped on aires in france - to be honest i have parked on the picnic site ones with no problems, even when there was no - one else there at all, and on ones with trucks. You can park just past the peage too, which is probably the safest of all as there is always someone about in the peage, and the police station.
------------- we are where we are - where are we ?
Now thanks for that - I didn't know that there were 'facilities' in the terminal building. We've slept overnight at Calais, but too far from any buildings to use anything. Where exactly did you park up? Did you check in first?

The showers/toilets are upstairs as you go through the righthand doors of the building.
Just park on the large car park with everyone else, there is no need to checkin. In fact, if you do, yu will not be able to use them. It is a couple of minutes walk, but if you want to use the facilities............
We've stopped at Hawthorn Farm nr Dover for an early morning ferry. Nice site and you get a good nights sleep. We also go down and spend a couple of nights and do a day trip. Site shop does good breakfasts and suppers at reasonable cost. Means you can get first ferry, be at carrefour for shopping at 9.30 as it opens and head off to wherever. We make Metz in a day with a visit to Luxembourg for the cheapest fuel in Europe enroute.
