Any one suggest best route planner.  Have tried 4 all give different suggestions, as this is our first time in France want to get it right.  We are planning on going to Du Letty site in Benodet which has had some great reviews.  Now just need to know how to get there.  Our ferry arrives 7.00pm , is it a better idea to stay somewhere near overnight as we want to arrive befor dark.  I have had routes varying from 65miles to 88miles how is this?.  Can anyone suggest the best to take.  If we decide to stay overnight anyone any ideas near to Roscoff.  Many thanks

sorry can't help too much, but, even if it's 88 miles you should be able to do that in less than 2 hours, and if your ferry lands at 7pm, you would still be there before dark to get set up and sorted out.
failing that, we've never sailed into roscoff but all the other ferry ports have an area where you can pull over for the night, or else find an aire on the route your taking and stay there.

There is a big car park just as you leave the ferry in Roscoff, on the right, half way up the hill, there are usually loads of vans there.

I agree with billie though, 88 miles is no distance on the French roads,

I have found http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm to be very accurate

Just go for it and drive to the campsite. You don`t want to be fiddling around putting up your FC just for one night. Get to the campsite, get the main cabin and beds up and leave the rest till the morning. Campsites in France are a little more laid back than here and won`t mind you arriving at nin or ten o`clock, though it would be wise to warn them of this in advance.  Roscoff is a very small town so you`ll be through and out of it in no time, plus the roads will be quiet at that time of evening.

Incidentally, think about having an early dinner on board the ferry. The French tend to eat between about 7 and 9pm  so you`ll be struggling to find somewhere after you get to the campsite, and you don`t want to have to worry about cooking as well.

Don't know about the route as we went via St Malo but Du Letty is a really lovely site, friendly, right on a quiet beach, nice walk into town along the sea front (or a land train goes from Point St. Giles next door) we went 2 years ago. Only thing was that the town was very quiet in June but looked as if it would liven up in July/August

Hi Sandie

Couldn't resist replying to this post.  If you've read the review on UKCS you'll have read my eulogy to our favourite campsite in France - Du Letty you've made a good choice.  When you say 7pm is that UK or French time remember the latter is an hour later.  Even if it 8pm in France you can still EASILY make Du Letty from Roscoff in a couple of hours.  Even if you were unfortunate enough to arrive at Du Letty late they will still let you in - see below.

Whichever route you take it only a couple of hours with quiet roads at that time of day.  Do make sure that you have plenty of fuel in your car as petrol stations tend to be few and far between and close early.  We got caught one year and had to ask a French motorist using the auto pump at a nearby supermarche if he would fill up our tank using his credit card and then we gave him cash - UK Cards don't work.

My prefered route is N58 from Roscoff and then onto the N785  (signed, I think for Quimper) through Brasparts (our kids found that name very amusing) and Playben.  This is a good road with some lovely countryside views and we have towed it many times with both caravan and previously tent in a trailer.  Then onto the A165/E60 for a little while and then back onto the N785 near Quimper and then follow local road signs for Benodet.  Du Letty is signgposted once you get into town.  The AA planner used to give this route right to the gate at Du Letty -it actually lists the campsite by name.

Some people used to travel all the way on autoroute via Brest, E50 and then E60 but I could never see the point.

If you get to Du Letty after about 10pm(I think) the security staff will direct you to pitch overnight on one of the pitches near to the road before reception and then you book in in the morning.

You should however be able to beat the curfew we have towing the above route with our twin axle 'van.  When booking in park-up somewhere - not much room but use a vacant pitch and have a good look round.  The best, but most popular pitches, IMHO, are nearest the beach.  If you are really fortunate you can get one near the beach.  We moved our 'van to one one year with only the hedge between us and the beach - it was sublime, our inlatable moored at the foot of the steps and fantastic views.

See I'm getting excited all over again.  I just know that you'll have a lovely time.  We are still tempted to go EVERYyear.  I grown up sons 18 and 20 still say that they'll come if we go to Du Letty.  However it's nice to see other places - we're off to the Italy this year.

Have a SUPER TIME be sure to try some of the suggestion in my review - distilled ffrom many happy hols at Du Letty.

Best wishes

Tim

Benodet c'est superb!  Great eateries and good walks and cycling.  beach club is fabby for the kids and the little white train is fun too ... good choice for Francophiles (I did recommend it to a neighbour who hated it ... came back early complaining the French didn't speak English lol!)

Thank you all for your tips.  I have gone as suggested onto Mitchell route finder.  They directed me a quicker way than mappy and green flag but we are unsure if we should use this route.  Reason being it looks like it may go throught mountains and as this is our first time towing not sure if its a good idea.  Anyone out there know if this is a very hilly route It saves 20 miles and according to them 45 minutes. Route as follows.D769 - D58- D788 - D69 -D30-D764-D18-D770-QUIMPER-N165/E60-D15-D738-D34. This route does not go to Brest .  Thanks again and yes Tim and Carry it was your comments that made me decide on Du Letty.  Hope the weather is good, if not we are moving down to Pornic Vendee region.

Hi Sandie

The route I suggested is the one that I have used with car and trailer, car and caravan rather old Peugeot 505 in those cases, fully loaded with camping gear or caravan plus up to 5 kids, my wife and then latterly with twin-axle van and 4x4.  Whilst some of the route passes through some hills there are no steep gradients at all.  Cars have coped with no problem each and every time.  We went to Du Letty by that route the first time we visited and towed in France about 13 years ago.  I think I said I got it from the AA website route planner.  I think it may even be the Michelin route only there's is in greater detail.  I just abbreviated mine using AA French atlas.

In all of our many visits I can only remember 2 wet periods of a couple of days each and we have been at least 5 times for 4+ weeks each time.

Happy hols to you

Best wishes

Tim

We stayed on the car park at Roscoff on Saturday night together with about 20 other caravans etc.

In the morning we discovered that all the caravan steps had been moved to different vans with some having 2

Playful French youngsters returning from a Saturday night revel !!

No damage was done but next time the step will be inside !!
