Hi,  I've just been on the web trying to book one night at each end of my holiday at Le Val de Trie near Abbeville - the system says I will need to pay 62 Euros for each booking for a 13 Euro pitch.  I've emailed the site in my halting French with lots or wrong tenses to check if this is correct and I'll try ringing Alan Rogers to book tomorrow ... any other ideas?  Thanks again, Liz

Do you really need to book in advance? why not take the chance of getting in somewhere - there are lots of campsites around there. Failing that just book the first night now and if you like the site book your final night while you are there.  Having looked at the site I would guess that the balance 34€ will be refunded but the 50€ deposit is non-negotiable.

Personally I would say it's too complicated and find somewhere else, but I like an easy simple life  ;-))

We have never booked our overnight stops and have always been able to get in somewhere. If it is just for the one night, it really doesn't matter what the site is like.

  hi liz9,

there are too many campsites for you to be stuck for a pitch for one night.  i have never failed to find somewhere.

One tip...write in English. It`s easier for a French person who speaks English to read good English than bad French. Then you can add a BabelFish translation so you cover both bases.

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

This is the system I use when I have to email in a language I don`t know a word of, like German. I`ve never been misunderstood yet. I always start off by apologising for my lack of their language though!

Thanks folks, I did get a response from the site saying that 'malheureusement' they only accept bookings for 2 nights minimum anyway.  It's a shame as we liked the website and thought it may be good for a future holiday ....  So I'm going to get a copy of the Michelin campsite book with its 3000 site lol!  Should put my mind at rest.  Be warned if you fancy it - the last copy we had was all in French so you need a reasonable scannng vocab.

Have just used babelfish to translate something from English in Spanish to see if it was accurate or not and it ended up as complete jibberish, you'd be better off writing in school french than using their translations. The recipient of the translated rubbish would have a laugh trying to decipher what was wanted though.

You might be better off buying the Caravan Club European Guide Vol 1 or Alan Rogers French Campsite book they both give far more information. I think both are available from Amazon.

Thanks David, you're right they do - I took a look at the Michelin (encouraged by its claim of 3000 sites) but found that all the ones in the area were already in either the CC or Alan Rogers, (albeit older copies)  at home ...
