I am heading for lakes Como and Garda early July. Can anyone recommend a site for either location that is reasonably peaceful, even at that time of year?

HI Maverick

I've not been yet but after a lot of research my wife and I are just in the process of booking La Riva on Lake Como.  It looks relatively small and quiet.  Of the 2 Lakes Como seems to be the quieter and it might be worth looking at some of the smaller lakes too.   We found the following site guidebooks useful

Alan Rogers Italy 2006 - Bought at a discount at Amazon

Caravan Club Caravan Europe 2006 - Bought at a discount at Amazon

ACSI Europe - Bought for £4 at Lidl recently - your local store may still have some

Caravan Club/Caravan and Camping Club brochures - Free from the clubs

Caravan Cheques Directory - £3 from Camping Cheques

If you don't already use camping cheques they could save you a lot of money in early July, as some sites still accept them then.  We can't use them as we are teachers and have to go in the peak period.

There are some helpful comments on sites on the replies to my post on Grand Tour of Italy on this, and other caravan websites.

Hope this helps.  I thought I'd post as not many people responded to our questions on Italy.

Hope you have a lovely time.  Hope you'll post about your visit when you get back and then we can share the benefits of YOUR experience.

Best wishes

Tim

Many thanks for all your time and effort Tim.

I'm leaving for a tour of eastern France the Italian lakes, Venice and Slovenia on Thursday, so little time for further research - therfore  I'm probably going to go with your 'la Riva' suggestion.

I'll be there 6th July for a few days. If your about look for the blue campervan.

Hope you have a great hol.

Kind regards

Maverick

All the best Maverick glad we were of some help.

We're following part of your route but not until the end of July so I doubt if our paths will cross.  We're towing down through France to Como and then on to Venice and then Rome and finishing up Near Naples.  At least that's the idea.

We've not been to Italy before although we towed widely in France, Germany, Austria Switzerland and Spain.

We liked eastern France along the Rhine when we went a couple of years ago..  Not surprisiingly quite Germanic in many areas.  Verdun with its First World Batttlefields was very interesting if you're into that sort of thing,  We stayed at Camping Les Breuils in Verdun.  I'd recommend that site; very near the town centre but quiet and pleasant with some pitches on the edge of its own small lake.  The town centre is very picturesque with a lovely quayside area, on the river, with lots of pavement restaurants.

Have a lovely time.  I hope you enjoy La Riva if you get there.  There are plenty of other campsites in that area.  You should probably find somewhere relatively easily as you are just ahead of the main season.  Also our twin-axle van is a bit big for many of the Italian site which I understand tend to have smaller pitches.

Best wishes

Tim

What was the most expensive thing? Food on site?

We're used to staying in Italy (OH is italian)albeit with family in Naples but would like to explore the lakes. I always thought the prices were comparable to the UK generally.
