Hello All

Can anyone please give some advice about gas in France I currently use Calor Propane cylinders. Can these be replaced in France or do you have to buy a French regulator & cylinder for your holiday Or will their propane regulator fit a French cylinder.

Would anyone suggest getting the Gaslow refillable cylinders

Calor cant be replaced in France but Campingaz is widely available on supermarket shelves. We use 2 campingaz that we got from our local tip. You can also find them at car boots and on ebay. Another option is to buy a French brand bottle and regulator when you are over there and keep them exclusively for your french trips but we like the fact that we can also use and exchange Campingaz in this country and use one as backup for our usaul Calor Gas bottle or when using 2 gas appliances.

John

It depends how long you are going for. I use two Calor 6kgs Propane cylinders, we have been away for about 30 nights so far this year and we still have gas left in the first cylinder so you may not need a replacement. We do use electrics always.  As magicaly points out Calor  can not be exchanged in France. The only universal gas is Camping Gaz but it is more expensive than Calor. Perhaps the answer is to use your Calaor but take a Camping Gaz 907 with you as a spare.

We are planning on spending 10 nights in France in August and have a barely used 4.5kg Calor bottle.

We plan on cooking most days, breakfast and dinner, on our 2 ring stove.

Am I likely to run out of gas and if I do what will it cost me to buy a new camping gas cylinder and regulator ?

Bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question I know but I don't want to have to buy a new cylinder before I go or have to try to come home with 2 cylinders.

For a 907 (largest) I would have thought about £40 including the gas and regulator. It might be worth contacting the local Scout group asa they may have one they will loan or sell at a lower price. We use a 6kgs Propane cylinder and if we don't use in 30 days (just cooking) I can't see you using 4.5kgs in 10. I assume you won't be running a fridge on gas, if that is the case your consumption will be higher.  Don't forget you can always nip into a supermarket in France and buy a Camping Gaz cylinder and the other bits.

I have 2 x 4.5kg Calor bottles. The one in use at the moment has about 7 days gas left after already having given 9 weeks use.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I should be ok.

If the gas runs out we'll just have to eat out every meal !
