We have car breakdown service with RAC bought with Tescos vouchers, however to upgrade to European breakdown is very expensive. Could anyone recommend a good breakdown policy to buy, as we will be in France for 3 weeks and often pass cars broken down and know how important it is. Thanks.

We too use Norwich Union.
Have campervan insurance and u.k. plus European breakdown cover. They also include breakdown for our car at no extra fee.
Good value.

We use http://www.vehicle-rescue.com/  They have been the cheapest I've found, and we had the misfortune of having to call them out last year whilst in France.  As with other Breakdown companies, we had some (but not all) poor customer service advisors on the telephone, but as far as cover was concerned, we couldn't have done better.  They provided hotel, flights home and repatriated our car and caravan.  They are part of the AXA group.  Caravans are insured free of charge.

joanna,

I have started several threads on this subject after being let down by green flag in my hour of need. I have looked into several different insurers and the best that I coul;d come up with was more than, £89 for full recovery in the UK and abroad including recovery of caravan. They do not stipulate a maximum caravn length so that suits me As a lot of insurers stipulate 18'. Its good to know that Vehicle-rescue have some real feedback from a member, however, it would be good to hear from anyone with a positive experience of more than.

I need to arrange cover within the next two weeks so any feedback re these two insurers would also be graetly appreciated.

Used RAC last year when our car broke down near La Rochelle. They were brilliant, arranged pick up of car, taxi back to our campsite 20 miles away, taxi next day 20 miles to car hire place in Rochefort so that we had a Megane for 2 days while our car was repaired, rang us to let us know progress on our car,  dropped off hire car 3 days later and taxi was waiting to take us to garage where our car had been repaired. Rang us up to ask if everything was OK, anything else we needed? Didn't have to pay a penny.

Don't know the exact cost of this because I pay for full RAC cover, home and abroad for my car, wife's car and son and daughter's cars - OK I know it's extravagant but I like peace of mind (especially where daughter is concerned!). My total bill each year is just under £300 for the 4 cars - thats about £75 a year for each car or less than £1.50 a week each. Worth paying in my mind.

The only other time I have used RAC in recent years is when daughter broke down on M1 late one very busy Friday night - she rang them, then rang me and I set off because she was only 20 minutes away. RAC man was there when I arrived, had solved the problem and off she went!

I have just checked RAC.IE and found it would cost me €98 for the car and €18 for caravan / trailer, I make that €116 , thats less that £100 in Sterling
