I've never heard of any issues of people being sucked into filters .... sounds like a whirlpool nightmare .... or perhaps an urban myth?  Certainly the laws about pools have been tightened up recently in France and a lot of gite owners have had to pay out to comply.

We had some drowned in a local pool for this some years ago.  They got caught on the bottom and could not get back up.

That sounds horrendous.  How powerful are these pumps?  What regulations exist?  Were there any changes to regulations following the tragic incident at your local pool?

It is horrifying to think that any pool pump could be powerful enough to hold anyone underwater in such circumstances.  Could you please provide further information regarding that particular incident so that I can research it?

Many thanks.

Oozat
