Now that our daughter Ruth's wedding happened with great rejoicing on Saturday I can now get down to putting the finishing touches to our Italian Grand Tour - HOORAY.  The wedding has take SO MUCH TIME planning that I'm not yet up to full speed on the hols although Camping La Riva and Ferry is definitely booked.  Waiting to hear from other campsites - they seem VERY SLOW to respond!!1

I would be grateful for advice on routes from Dunkerque to Lake Como, Camping La Riva.

We are hoping to travel down through France, we're great Francophiles with quite a bit of experience of towing in France

I'm still not decided on whether to use the Autoroutes or try the National roads.  We arrive in Dunkerque at 7.00am on Monday 24 July (we've planned a night halt at Dover on the 23 July so that we are ready for a full day's driving in France.  We have booked to be at Camping La Riva on Lake Como on the afternoon of Thursday 27 July.

Our outfit is a twin-axle Avondale Landranger(7.36 metres long) towed by a Vauxhall Monterey 4x4 and there just my wife and I travelling and so I'd be interested in hearing opinions on the various route options particularly with regard to gradients, narrow roads, etc for our lengthy combination.

Suggestions for night halts would, also, be appreciated.  We have Alan Rogers and Caravan Europe 2006 Guides.  We like rural sites preferably with lake/riverside pitches.  We may well stay at one site for 2 nights on the way south.

On 5 August we are travelling on to Camping Cavelino near Venice for a 7 night stay.

On 12 August we are travelling on for a 5 night stay near Rome - still debating whether I Pini or Roma Camping Flash.

17 August we are travelling on to near Naples and either (Santa Fortunata, Sorrento or Villaggio Athena, Paestum.  Still waiting to hear from them!!) - hoping to visit Naples, Pompei and the Almalfi coast.

22 August we are starting back northwards with as yet unplanned route and stops to arrive at Dunkerque to catch the Norfolk Line Ferry on 29 August at 6.00am

We may well travel north through Italy by a different route to the outward journey, possibly west or east coasts.

All suggestions on routes and night halts grafefully received.

Thanks in anticipation

Tim

Others will advise on routes and stops, but unless you are very experienced and confident at towing, consider stopping
south of Pompei, but north of Sorrento. The roads are very windy and hilly and may be better travelled in just a vehicle. No where is too far away, but parking in Sorrento can be problematic, so consider taking the coastal train. Very cheap and efficient.
See campeggio zeus on the eurocampings.co web site. This will also give you more options if you do decide to tow further south, through Sorrento towards Salerno.
Enjoy,
Jim.

Tim

I can get you as far as the Swiss border at Basle but cant help after that.

Leave Dunkerque and use the A25 to Lille. Follow signs to Tournai and then Mons then follow motorway East to Namur then turn South on A4 towards Luxembourg. Heading towards Metz. All this section is toll free. Take the A4 to Strasbourg leaving at Saverne and head south onto the A35 (free) to the Swiss border. All very easy. With your size of outfit you will will find it a lot easier on the motorways. As for somewhere to stop we have just come back from Alsace and there is a very good municipal at Ribeauville just North of Colmar and just a few miles from the motorway. It's a good drive from Dunkerques but at about 390 miles and a 7.00am start you could do it in 3 X 130 mile stretches ariving about teatime. There a plenty of eating places in the town centre about 10 mins walk.

If you are going down through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.  A couple of nights at the L'Escale Campsite at Grand Bornand (45 minutes before Mont Blanc tunnel)  This is a lovely site in a "chocolate box style swiss chalet village".  Nice restuarant and close to village with staying a couple of nights (we managed 14 and still didnt want to go home).

Where are you first planning to stop in Italy?

If your heading for the lakes Como and Garda I would reccomend Belguim, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria coming into Italy through the Brenner pass by far the easiest journey plenty of campsites to stop at if feeling tired and no tolls until Austria. You can follow the E routes that take from motorway to motorway without having to worry about which junction to take as you simply follow the E route that you want. Very easy relaxing journey if you would like more details on the route just ask, Ciao

This route is almost 200 longer than via Switzerland.   I cannot envisage it being a viable route to the north of Lake Como

You should try it the extra miles disapear with ease of driving plus it is also cheaper have you paid the toll for Switzerland for a car towing it's not the best choice. I can only speak from my travells so it may not fit others but as I live only an hour half from Garda and I travel by road to the UK at least twice a year last year four times I can speak from giving it a go as to speak, I have tried all routes over the years by car and on Bike and the quickest and easiest I have found is the route above. It may not suit you personly only trying to help "EH"

Thanks for all those route suggestions folks.  I'll be pouring over the European Atlases this week before finalising the route.  Your personal recommendations are a GREAT HELP./

I'd be grateful, however, for further advice.

As well as routes to Italy, still gratefully received, we'd be grateful for comment on driving/routes once we're ACTUALLY IN  Italy.

We value highly the advice we get on this website as it has proved so reliable in the past. Guidebooks, etc are useful but personal advice by those whoo have "gone before" is invaluable.

Thanks in anticipation

Tim

ONE LAST "BUMP"  to the top of the Board before I print off all these helpful suggestions and get down to working out the final route on the road map.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Further comments still welcome both on the relative merits/cost of the different routes to Italy and

ESPECIALLY

ROUTES IN ITALY TOO.

Hope everyone has a super summer

Best wishes

This really is the final "Bump" but I'd still be grateful for more info on towing IN ITALY - Now that I've had all this VERY HELPFUL advice on getting to Italy in the first place.

Thanks again to past and hopefully future posters

Have a super summer

Thanks for that Nero.  You've been very helpful.  I'll certainly take your phone number and other advice with me.  We're looking forward to visiting Italy for the first time.  We should arrive at La Riva by next Thursday.  What's the weather like at the moment.  It's unusually high ternperatures in the UK at present.

Thanks again.

Hot Hot Hot Just got back from a weekends camping at the lakes normally a bit cooler in the mountains 44c this morning as we were taking the tent down, but a nice stiff breeze to take the edge off of it, expect some thunder storms is normal when this hot.
