can anyone reccommend a nice campsite suitable for a family , must have swimming pool and a bar. we have never drove abroad so would be looking for a campsite within 20-30 radius of a ferry port. we would be taking our trailer tent.

There's a really good family friendly campsite near to Cherbourg called L'Anse du Brick. If you click on my profile you'll see a link to the review I did of it. It's lovely for families, has a great little bar with a view over the sea and a very close beach with private access. It's literally a 15 minute drive from the ferry port at Cherbourg.
Got to second the how easy it is driving in France, once you lose the rest of the traffic off your ferry there's hardly any traffic on the roads. Great motorways loads of service areas and real easy driving. Just remember to go the wrong way round the roundabouts!

Trailer tent, caravan and too many tents!

But I agree that you will soon adapt to drivibg in France, it is actually much less hassle than the UK, [with some obvious exceptions - like Paris!] so don't restrict your trip too much.
Enjoy

I agree, dont stay close to a port the driving is so easy, roads are quiet and speed limits sensible, weve never seen any road rage or aggressive driving in france either ( particularly brittany)
YOu'll be suprised how far you can get to a really nice area in quite a short time
Ah, but why do we all try and get as far away from the ports as we can? If you are going low season, it does make sense to look for the better weather to be found south of the Loire (roughly). And I for one would not spend any time in Calais with the warnings about illegal immigrants, and about thefts from cars, given by the FO. But in summer, there must be lovely parts of the north of France, without spending a fortune on fuel and motorway tolls. I believe the area around Le Touquet, Berck Plage, St Valery, Le Crotoy etc are very popular.

No swimming pool, but a beautifully secluded campsite in the country within 20 minutes of boulogne, does EHU alaso a few B & B beds if you dont want to put up tents is Manoirde senlecques ... Pernes le boulogne ...will have a look for the website address. Little stream running through the campsite ...about 3 or 4 separated little fields ..looked wonderful in the sun we stayed `chambres dote` last week on our way back home .. come off the A16 calais boulogne road at exit 33 follow the signs to wimmelle but at the next roundabout off on the D233 and stay on it until you reach pernes les boulogne. Great stop prior to jumping on the ferry home ..time to visit hypermarket if you want to ... but also a spot people seemed to stay for a while! He speaks some english phone number 0321833596 (french code no on here!)
Full address is Mnoir de senlecques 62126 pernes les boulogne france!
(look at the direction to the campsite carefully on his website ..once you find the D233 the campsite is on it ..just trundle along until you find the white gates!)
