Hi Guys

Maybe off to Oz for a good few months to live and work, possibly to emigrate there at a later date.

Has anyone any knowledge / experiences of camping there ?

Hope someone out there can help.

Cheers,

Hi Gordon and Julie

I spent a year in Australia around 20 years ago and travelled around with a tent, had a great time. I travelled around on buses and hitched a bit (I didn't drive then) but lots of people now seem to buy cheap cars and do it that way.

I seem to remember the sites were in quite good locations, not too far to walk from town, but these may have changed since I was there. I also stayed in a lot of backpackers/youth hostels, also quite a good cheap way of seeing things.

If I can give you one piece of advice, it would be to make sure you get to New Zealand, has to be one of the best places to camp in the world, a beautiful country with friendly locals.

Our son and daughter-in-law spent 4 weeks in Australia hiring a small campervan.  They said the campsites were good.

Hi Gordon and Julie

We,ve done heaps of camping here and I think you,ll find the caravan parks/camping grounds pretty good.Of course, having said that,we haven,t camped in the UK,so I,m not sure how they compare? Could let you know in October when we get back from our hols in UK and Europe.

The prices are pretty reasonable (I,ll have a look at some for you) and like Fudge said,a lot of the campsites are in the towns,so you can walk to a lot of places.Campsites vary from 4 star down to camping on the beach with limited amenties. As far as I know we don,t have any holiday parks like Butlins etc.

You must be very excited about your trip....do you have any ideas about where you would like to go in Oz? Most people fly into Sydney...it,s a great place, lots to see and do...the Blue Mountains are just beautiful and they only are a couple of hours from Sydney.

The biggest thing that you will probably find is the distances between places! We live in South Australia and if we want to drive to Queensland it,s a 3000km drive! A pity because we love it there! Because it,s not very populated here,it means the roads have very little traffic which makes travelling times pretty good.

And I agree with Fudge,if you get time, try to see NZ...it,s beautiful. We went there a couple of years ago,we didn,t camp, but did stay in some on-site vans in caravan parks.

Have fun planning your trip...I,m envious..it,s funny but I would like to do the same as you,but in France! LOL

If theres anything specific that you would like to know I would be more than happy to help you with it if I can.

Cheers Mel

In 2004 we hired a camper van for 2 weeks and drove from Cairns to Brisbane. Very rarely did we have a problem finding a site, although it was August (winter). The sites are usually a very reasonable cost and most we stayed on had 'permanent' pitches. Locals all very friendly. If you go for the ones further out of 'town' you often find that a free lift is available into town or there is a bus stop nearby. The roads along the Queensland coast were brilliant but follow the advice signs and stop every couple of hours for a coffee - with no traffic on the roads they can become hypnotic. Do not recomend driving at night either too many animals to hit! (No we didn't). Our daugter did a circular trip Sydney to Sydney she drove from Darwin to Perth and reckoned it was the most 'Australian'! We hope to go back and we will definately be camping again. Watch out for the stingers in the sea, and at some sandy, fir tree sites be prepared to be bitten. Lots of hostels have a camp site attached and all seem to have electric or gas BBQ areas that are either free or charge a minimal rate. Have a great time on your travels.

Another place you might want to visit is Tasmania - I didn't camp there (lots of hostels back in 1985, so left my tent in Melbourne) but it is a beautiful place.

For further information you might want to check out this newsgroup.

Happy planning, you'll have a great time!
