Eddie, you should find all the petrol stations on the Autoroute open as usual on a Sunday - but prices are likely to be similar to what you would pay in a non-motorway UK service station, at least for petrol.
If you require petrol and not diesil dont worry about saving any money in France, fill up over here and drive through Sunday not worrying about supplies till Monday. kiev
Like Caen you'll probably find you can use your PIN on your debit card. I asked at the port (UK) and they directed me to a UK Pin friendly garage.

saying that its a holiday so I wouldnt worry and fill up in the UK - especially on a sunday!!
For diesel, I would definitely hang on until you get to France - as I said, all service stations on the Autoroutes will be open, and quite a few on the busier main roads. Often the hypermarket fuel stations are open too, but self-service only, and British cards do not work in that mode, so not much use to you, unless you can persuade someone to take cash from you and use their card to pay (it has been done!).
If you really want cheap diesel then go to belgium if thats not too far out of your way, its about 20% cheaper than France.
Having said all that your only going to save about £25 - thats not a lot compared to the the overall cost of you holiday. Fill up on the way back by all means.
Cite de Europe is open 10-7 on Sundays, but their fuel station is underground, with height restriction, I seem to remember it's 2.60m so not suitable for everyone. They accept UK cards. The diesel was amongst the cheapest we found in March 06
There's an Aire (think it's Les Deux Caps) with a large TOTAL filling station just a few kilometers South of Calais on the A16... about E 1.20 a litre a few weeks ago when I was there.
It's a bit of a lottery. I certainly wouldn't arrive in France with less than half a tank of fuel. Where in France are you headed? Are you having an overnight stop anywhere?
If you are, I would buy enough diesel in the UK to get you to this point in France. Then fill up when you set off on the Monday morning when everything is once again open.
Have a great time............

thanks for all the advice, will prob fill up here as we have got a long drive to the loire region, don't want to chance it as well as the fact that my sister and her family are coming along too and the've never camped in france before, wouldn't want to put them off
I found many of the supermarket petrol pumps are automatic self service - you put your card in before filling up, then it debits your card. Most of those I found only accept french bank debit cards. This caused some consternation as I was very low on fuel when I realised this on a sunday morning near Bray de dunes.
Autoroute stations were a better bet, VISA all the way, and cheaper than UK, even at motorway prices. I filled up in Grande Synthe before boarding my ferry and had a stress free drive home.
Belgians are even worse though. Even on motorways. Bah!

If you can find a friendly frenchman (contradiction in terms) and give him/her cash they might run their card through the machine for equivalent amount??
