I use The Micheling Guide to Camping/Caravanning in France. It lists several municipal sites and can be used in conjunction with a Michelin motoring map of France. Towns that have a municipal will have a tent symbol in a black circle. You can then check it out in the guide. Also Caravan Club do an excellent site guide for France. It consists of thousands of sites and all are reported on by CC members on their travels.

You need the Aire de Services Camping-Car book. We have just bought ours whilst in France for 8 euros which is a must for anyone with a motorhome travelling on the continent. It lists campsites and aires where you can charge up, empty water, fill up with fresh water and empty chemical toilet for either a couple of euros or in some cases free of charge.

The camping and caravaning club sell one I believe, I hope that helps.

There is no official guide to the municipal sites in France . It would be great if there was but the Michelin has a good number of them and the abccamping website mentioned above is also a very comprehensive list. It does not have links to websites but is worth printing off and referring to the towns you are interested in visiting. A lot of french towns and villages now have their own very good websites and if they have a municipal site it will be listed under hebergement and may point to photos and a description. It is worth googling towns you are interested in visiting.
