Hi Allnew
We had 2 weeks a Birkelt this August. Huge site, very well organised with multi lingual staff. Clean plentiful facilities and large individually partitioned pitches.
We were there along with every Caravanner and Camper in Holland, or it felt that way. With there being so many Dutch, naturally the entertainment and activities tended to be biased towards them, but most could be joined in with, they even have a small Circus that does the rounds of each campsite.
They also have a clever system of siting families according to the age of their children, so the kids have every chance of meeting similar aged friends. Each area has a playground with the usual child proof climbing frames and a skateboard ramp etc.
The Pool is great, but was really crowded most of the time, we worked out the best time to go was when the Dutch were having their evening meal (4 - 6pm) as it is open until 9.00pm most nights.
There is a Restuarant on site that does really good value meals if you can't be bothered to cook, we were warned off the takeaway by a dutch couple who had been ill after eating. Larochette (about 2km) the nearest village, has an excellent Chinese Restaurant a Pizza Parlour and a local type Bar / Pub.
One thing we did learn from our Dutch neighbours was they pitch their caravans across the back of the pitch with the awning facing front, its a lot more friendly than the British front to back way, and they sit out at night chatting and socialising, we followed suit and changed our van round after a few days.
The only gripe I have was we had to get to Dunkirk for 1400hrs to catch our ferry, and found as we tried to leave that you can't get out until 0830 as there is no one to switch on the barrier power. Fortunately we made it.
All in all Luxembourg is a nice place, ideal for relaxing, food and fuel are cheap, nowhere is far from anywhere and the local people are friendly enough. Campsites are dotted all over the place, usually by rivers, we must have seen 15 or 20 we liked the look of. Camping Fuussekaul and Camping Nommerlayern both looked worth more investigation.
Have a look here then select all campsites.
