Hi

Camping Birkelt. Pronounced "Beer Cult " which I thought was a great start!

Nice site. Was described in a previuos thread as being impressivevly green in its methods: that's lots of recycling, not lots of tress, though they do have some trees.

I've been twice and would go again, if only en-route to Switz.

Weird hot water rationing system where each person only gets 8 minutes per day to be used in either showers or dish wash. But somehow that's enough, especially if you find a tap on "free vend".

Fairly near to Luxembourg city, but then where in Luxembourg isn't.

You'll like the website too.

TT.

Hi Allnew

We had 2 weeks a Birkelt this August. Huge site, very well organised with multi lingual staff. Clean plentiful facilities and large individually partitioned pitches.

We were there along with every Caravanner and Camper in Holland, or it felt that way. With there being so many Dutch, naturally the entertainment and activities tended to be biased towards them, but most could be joined in with, they even have a small Circus that does the rounds of each campsite.

They also have a clever system of siting families according to the age of their children, so the kids have every chance of meeting similar aged friends. Each area has a playground with the usual child proof climbing frames and a skateboard ramp etc.

The Pool is great, but was really crowded most of the time, we worked out the best time to go was when the Dutch were having their evening meal (4 - 6pm) as it is open until 9.00pm most nights.

There is a Restuarant on site that does really good value meals if you can't be bothered to cook, we were warned off the takeaway by a dutch couple who had been ill after eating. Larochette (about 2km) the nearest village, has an excellent Chinese Restaurant a Pizza Parlour and a local type Bar / Pub.

One thing we did learn from our Dutch neighbours was they pitch their caravans across the back of the pitch with the awning facing front, its a lot more friendly than the British front to back way, and they sit out at night chatting and socialising, we followed suit and changed our van round after a few days.

The only gripe I have was we had to get to Dunkirk for 1400hrs to catch our ferry, and found as we tried to leave that you can't get out until 0830 as there is no one to switch on the barrier power. Fortunately we made it.

All in all Luxembourg is a nice place, ideal for relaxing, food and fuel are cheap, nowhere is far from anywhere and the local people are friendly enough. Campsites are dotted all over the place, usually by rivers, we must have seen 15 or 20 we liked the look of. Camping Fuussekaul and Camping Nommerlayern both looked worth more investigation.

Have a look here then select all campsites.

HTH

Paul

I got my route map from RAC planner. I went from dunkirk via Beligum - Brussels - then south to luxembourg, the off inot the Saar valley.

Its a lot longer than it looks on the map!

I did it in one leg, but next time Im stopping on the way down!

Hi,

Just checked the Caravan Club Europe vol 2. They list 45 sites in Luxembourg.

We spent a few days at Camping de la Sure, Diekirch two years ago and loved it. Right by the river and a five minute walk into town. Website www.diekirch.lu click on Welcome then accommodation.

We're going south next week and plan to stop at Arlon. Don't forget Lux has the cheapest fuel around!

John
