Next year we have decided to spend 2 weeks on the Ile de Re. We really like the idea of abandoning the car and just spending a leisurely holiday using our bikes.

Can anyone recommend or have personal experiences, good or bad, of any campsites, preferably on the south coast and close to either Ars, La Courde or Bois-Plage. We prefer the smaller, quieter sites but dont mind the bigger, all singing, dancing sites as long as they are quiet.

Thanks

Carol

Carol

We stayed at L'Ocean between Ars and Couarde. Nice campsite with good facilities. Beach just across the road. We were there in September and we did get bitten quite a lot, not sure it would be the same earlier in the year. I have some pictures on my website. You won't be alone if you use your bike, the Island is swarming with them!!! You do know the toll to get onto the Island is around €16 for a car!!!!

Hi David

Already been onto your excellent website and read your review of L'Ocean so it is high on my campsite list at the moment. I am an avid follower of your travels around Europe and you mentioned the biters so I have bought a couple of ClearLites in the hope of keeping them at bay. I know the bridge toll is steep but the savings in petrol should cover that and more we hope.

We went to Ile de Re a couple of years ago, middle of August, OH said didn't need reservations - drove all over the island before we managed to find a site that had space and that was only because we drove up just as someone was checking out. Things seemed to get a lot quieter tho after about the 20th.

We've stayed at the municipal site in Ars which is a bit basic but pretty quiet outside the main July/August french holiday period and has direct access to the sea - no beach tho so not good for swimming but good for rockpooling. Also stayed at L'Interlude which is near Bois Plage, and backs onto one of the nicest beaches on the island. That's got more facilities, and seemed more spacious, it was nice and quiet when we were there, but that was at the start of September when all the french folk had gone back to work/school.

Also stayed on L'Ocean, can endorse David's remarks, absolutely brilliant site. Stayed at the beginning of June this year and, yes, got bitten very badly then too. The site also accept Camping Cheques, in case you didn't already know. No problem getting on either, we were with friends and we managed to get adjacent pitches, no problem. We only went on the beach once though: after a couple of hours everywhere was covered in black insects, they were everywhere! Everybody eventually left the beach, after trying to stick it out, but the little b*****s won in the end! Cycling is great of course, Ars is a lovely little town, and in that part of the island is also the area of natural beauty, lots of different birds etc. Saw black swans there. Can thoroughly recommend it! Oh yes, the toll for the bridge off peak was 9 Euros, I think the higher rate applies from around the middle/end of June (unsure of exact date, I think it was the 15th or so) until the 11th of September, that was this year.
Ina.

Hi, i have to ask anyone who has been to Ile De Re`,  is the insect problem really that bad ???? i have 3 kids so its a must to get onto the beaches without being driven off by these little blighters. Ive been to vendee before and not noticed them before or are they unique to the island. However we all love our bikes so cycling there will be great.

As campsite assessors for the Alan Rogers Guides, we thought that the following sites were also worth considering for the Ile de Re: look at the wb sites for: www.camping at les-peupliers and www.lagrainetiere at free.fr also have a look at the Alan Rogers website www.alanrogers.com for other ideas in that area. We looked at almost 60 sites in both the Vendee and the Charent-Maritime in 2006, some of them were not of a good enough standard to be accepted for the Guides

We have stayed on the Ile de Re several times, and by far the best site that we have found - for our needs has to be Antioche. It has direct access to the beach - no need to cross roads, is very friendly, clean and quiet at night. It is also very safe as the beach access gate and main gates are locked at night.

Coolboarder - did you go to Ile de Re and were the insects bad? Thinking of going in couple of weeks but the bites definitely put me off. Can anyone else advise?
