Going to Caen would be less miles to drive to the Loire but because of your dog bear in mind that crossing is about 5 3/4 hours long and will be very expensive. LD Lines to Le Harve would be no good because it's overnight.

We did the dunkirk crossing last year and allthough we didn't go to the loire i would recommend the crossing and norfolk line were excellent.

Depending on what time you arrive at Dunkirk? You can do the drive down to The Loire Valley without needing an overnight stop.

The fastest I ever did it was 5&1/2 hours - the longest was 8 hours.

thanks for those comments, I had visions of having to catch one of the dearer ferries

from Portsmouth or like, it nice to know I can do it to the loire valley in about 6  or 7 hours, what is the area like round the Loire??

Don't forget the driving times mentioned are just that, driving time. I notice you have a caravan and dogs so your times will be longer because of slower average speed and stops. If travelling any distance from Calais I always use the 05.30 ferry from Dover so that will get you going from Calais at about 08.00. Lets say about 330 miles to the Loire so I would do that in three equal stages using two 45 minute stops. Using that formula that would get you to your destination about 4pm. So that works out at a 12 hour day from leaving England. Certainly enough for me.
