A days drive from Dunkirk - we stayed here this summer, about six miles away and were the only British on site. It's a lovely part of the world - sort of sub-alpine. Cirque de Baume is pretty, loads of waterfalls to explore, a couple of hours drive to Switzerland and Geneva.
The lakes are brilliant blue, warm and great for swimming. Being high season the sites were full and the lakes were busy, but the area as a whole was fairly quiet. Not a great deal to see in Clairvaux, but OK as a base. Lots of windey roads . If you like waking head for the Cascades du Herisson and the Pic d'Aigle.
