Booked the ferry and a fortnight at camping-catiniere in August next year and I'm after any advice about the site, area and the drive down from Calais as it will be our first trip abroard. We are intending to have a day trip or two over to Calais to get the hang of driving out there before taking the van, any help would be much appriciated.

Hi

I am afraid I dont know that particular campsite, however have camped in Normandy several times and think you have chosen an excellant place for your first trip. The drive from Calais is easy, the roads are pretty good and not too busy compared to some other areas of France....famous last words! Once there, there is a lovely variety of things to do, and we have always been lucky with the weather which helps.

Just keep in your mind, as you disembark, "Driver to the kerb"...works a treat, especially on roundabouts!

If it is Domaine Catiniere near Honfleur, then we stayed there for two stopover nights in August 2005 on the way to and from Brittany. Very pretty little site and Honfleur is really lovely. It is an easy drive from Calais and you have to cross the most amazing bridge just before you arrive at the site, kids loved it. One word of warning, the campsite owners did insist that our boys wore speedos in the pool but they did it in a very friendly manner and because we didn't have any a friend of the owner leant us some. We could have easily stayed a few more nights.

Hope you enjoy your first adventure abroad.

Susie

Actually thats a good point  Susie has raised about "speedos". It is extremely common in France that swim shorts are not allowed in pools, for my boys we sourced the square leg trunk type cheaply and always take just incase, cos horror of horrors they couldnt possibly be seen in knickers!

Gary this is a nice friendly site.Pitches are not very big but are screened by hedges, water and hookup close to pitch(in hedge usually).Toilets/showers are basic but clean. You need to take a plug for the sinks.Good fresh bread etc delivered daily. There is a small shop/bar/takeway  on site. Easy drive from Calais. Once your over  the bridge(awesome) first exit .Check route on Mappy or Michelin but route is OK, access is from a country road need to watch for the entrance to the site on the right.

if you don't fancy coping with the Normandy Bridge, it is HIGH!, and a bit like climbing up a big dipper - you can cross the R Seine further east, OH hates heights and was very unhappy when we used it! although the other crossings are not as straightforward to find and use.                                                       http://www.carte-postale.com/honfleur/pontdenormandie.htm

the French autoroutes are very easy and advantageous to use. you have to pay but it is well worth it, none of the congestion as per the UK.

petrol / desiel is cheaper at the supermarkets, but not a big differnce on the autoroutes, but make sure you go via normal shopping hours the French close early and weekends is another matter. Autoroute service stations are 24/7. others are also but you need to use a credit card, no point putting your uk cards in as they will not work.
