And don't even think of holidaying in the UK, as after 12 hours stuck in traffic your pitch will be too small, with too many dogs/kids/neighbours and a thumping disco next door or absolute silence.

And when you do get settled the wind/rain/drought/flooding will make your holiday impossible so you go home to find you've ben burgled/compulsory purchased/been made the subject of a preservation order.

So forget about holidays and enjoying life. It just ain't like that

Ecclesman makes an interesting point about Ferries. ETA have been looking at them for years...

It's always advisable to be cautious when travelling in Spain, whether with a caravan or not. There are any number of alarmist horror stories, and I have no intention of putting anyone off (I'm going back to Andalucia in April and will drive all the way), but there are a couple of things to remember. In my opinion, Barcelona and the Basque country are the areas where you are most likely to get robbed, but much of Spain is extremely poor and they see foreign tourists as easy pickings.

1. Avoid carrying any quantity of cash. It's easy enough to get from cashpoints anyway.

2. Be alert in any crowded area, I find that keeping your wallet in a shirt pocket is better than back pockets.

3. Ladies should keep a firm grip on their handbags in public areas.

4. Be especially wary of anyone who is offering unsolicited 'help'. If you haven't asked for it, just walk away.

5. If you can, avoid driving at night.

6. If the worst does happen, do not expect any help from the Spanish Police. There are less criminals in Broadmoor! If you report a theft, they will behave like you are lying and then find something on your vehicle to 'fine' you for. My in laws have a house in Southern Spain and have actually been robbed by a policeman who pulled them over to 'check' their car.

Much of the same advice applies to Southern Italy, and indeed anywhere where the people are poor enough to look at crime as a career. MOST IMPORTANTLY, DON'T LET IT PUT YOU OFF. Areas of Southern Europe are absolutely beautiful, wonderful places to travel and most people holiday without any incident whatsoever!! If you take sensible precautions, and stay alert, chances are you will be fine too. To put it all in perspective, with the exception of the point about the police, I would advise visitors to London to be equally vigilant.

It is important to travel to these bandit areas properly tooled up. I keep a length of lead pipe under the drivers seat and a bowie knife taped between my houlder blades. If they make me open the boot they will be surprised to be confronted with by kalashnikov and if all of that fails I will just get the missus to talk them into submission.

Seriously though, and this is a true story, My friends and I were on a boys trip to Barcelona and were walking home from the Mare Magnum when we were confronted with a group of young gypsys asking for cigarattes. As non smokers we politely rebuffed them. At that the ring leader started searching my inebriated buddies inner pockets for "cigs" of course he was at the pickpocketing. But I was not as drunk as he thought and proceeded to shal we say physically advise him of the inappropriateness of his personal invasion.

They disappeared (four of them) only to return some minutes later with a gang of some twenty - non older than 16. All that was missing was a Catlunyan Fagin. A scuffle ensued, we were in fear of knives to be honest, byut they were eventually dealt with with a few well aimed (and some not so well aimed) coups des tetes. In the scuffle my watch was taken.

Indignant, fearful and angry I stormed off to the police who were stationed only yards from where the incident had taken place at the Plaza Colombe. I don't speak much in the way of Spanish but managed "abrobbar" which I thought was robber and - now that the chief offender appeared on the scene complaining of lost teeth and bloodied garment I pointed my finger and roared over and over "donde esta mi horario" where is my clock I believe!

So this pantomime lasted some 15 minutes while the police just tried to calm me down and eventually with what little English the chief officer there had at his disposal he was able to point to is vehicle and shrug his shoulders as he said " I is berry sorry mi amigo bott we no help you" QUANDO I screamed. "Zees ees because we no be police we be medicos"

Yes I had ranted and raved for the arrest of this ethnic mugger for fully fifteen minutes with the local first aiders!

What is Spanish for "I'll get me coat" - Conseguiré mi capa?

When we got back to the Hotel we were told that these were kids from illegal immigrant families whose only sources of income were begging or theft. They had mixed feelings. I am afraid I did not.

BUT don't worry you will be fine :D
