Hi Eddie12 Thanks for reply. As we are first timers in Spain, can you give us any tips (toll roads, camp sites etc.) on route Bilbao/Almeria.
Hi Norma,
It's at least seven or eight years since we did the trip via Bilbao, and we were heading for the Meddy coast, just south of Barcelona. We used the autoroute the whole way, and whilst I can't remember the actual charges, from memory, they weren't particularly expensive. I actually found that route to be very quiet, traffic-wise, including the service areas. On my return journey to Bilbao, I decided to try using the main roads instead, to minimise the boring aspect, but due to the state of the roads, with their quite deep pot-holes, I soon reverted back onto the autoroute again.
One thing I would recommend is that you take a mental note of the surroundings/scenery when you get off the ferry, especially where you join the autoroute, which is very close to the ferry terminal.(From memory, there is a huge radio mast at the road junction-or some other point of interest which is very prominent!) The ferry actually docks in Santurtzi, which is a few miles from Bilbao, and when returning, make sure you leave the autoroute at the same place as you first joined it, otherwise, if you head on into Bilbao, you'll encounter all sorts of delays.
Regarding sites, I'm afraid I can't help you with, as I was able to drive directly to the one where we were booked into in about eight hours from getting off the boat.If you are going via the coast, I think you'll find there is plenty of choice, though perhaps not until you actually reach the coast, but, if you are going straight down via Madrid, you may find that the same choice is not available.
Hope this may be of some use to you, and here's to a lovely holiday.
