what do we have to do if want to take her, and does she have to stay in the car the whole time on the ferry as i think our crossing is 7 hours

She needs a pet passport, which takes about 7 months until your dog can return to the UK under the scheme, if your dog hasn't had a rabies jab before.. Info on the DEFRA website. Different ferry companies operate their own rules on what happens during the crossing, and charge for the pet to travel, so check with them. Not all take pets.
Your dog will not be allowed off the car deck whoever you go with unless it is a guide dog. She will have to stay in the car or be put in one of the cages that most ferry companies supply on the car deck.
Superfast ferries from Rosyth to Zebrugge are the only ferry company who allow dogs in cabins but not in public areas except they have a special on deck area for dogs

If you havent got a pet passport check with your vet now the process to get one takes at least 3 months not all vets do them we use Summerhill Pets in Newport.I assume from the time you are going Portsmouth Le Havre or similar(7 hrs) we use the short route because of the dogs.As has been said P&O,Norfolkline and Seafrance take dogs and they stay in the car for the crossing. You have to check with the ferry company if you can visit them on the longer crossing.
We use the Channel Tunnel. That way we stay in the car with our dog, and it's only 35 minutes or so. Not the most convenient for us, but it's no stress for the dog
We took Merlin to France and Spain last summer, he loved it. We used the Chanel Tunel, it was very easy and stress free for both us and Merlin. Getting a pet passport is simple, even if it does mean several visits to the vet for rabies jab, blood test etc, and the cost is far less than the cost of kennels for a couple of weeks.
If you want to take your dog abroad next summer, start NOW as you will need seven months from your dog having their first rabies jab to being allowed back into the country from abroad ( 30 days from jab to blood test, and six months from blood test results to re-entry into the UK)
Take a look at www.dogsaway.co.uk they have lots of info and advice on taking your pets abroad.
