Has anyone used AT&T  Acconia Ferries on the Bilbao - Portsmouth Route? Their prices are a lot cheaper than P & O on the same route and my suspicious mind is wondering why.

Hi Nick,

I have just checked after seeing your post, and the price with AT & T seem to be the same in Euros as P&O are in pounds, so a saving of around 30%.

I'm going to do some research on Google, and if it looks ok I'll be booking. I'll post again & let you know.

I have just re-quoted this crossing in July with The Caravan Club service and it is even cheaper!!! It's nearly half the price of P&O.

Also, if you have to alter your travel plans, the CC do the re-booking for you, at a charge of only £10.00 (please check with them as I speak from last years' experience when they were excellent).

Thanks for all the help. AT&T offer a canellation/change insurance on their website at quite a reasonable price.

I'm really interested to hear if any forum members have used both and can compare facilities i.e. cabins, food etc.

Hello again Nick.

2 years ago we came back from Spain with P&O and it was over £600 one-way.

On this AT&T crossing the ferry back takes a wee bit longer, so that could be a negative, but as it appears to be a brand-new boat, and at a cost of less than £600 return through the CC, that'll do for me.

One site we will definately return to is Playa Joel at Noja (in between Bilbao & Santander) excellent beach & nice local town.

We did the Portsmouth Bibao return trip last summer using AT&T. The cost and timesaving to Biarritz was so good that I cancelled a Poole/St Malo crossing and cost myself £50 cancellation charge - but saving the journey in the car to the bottom of France was well worth it.

My opinions of AT&T:-

FOR -

Excellent value (obviously),

new ship therefore very clean,

on board facilities good (cinema - new but not latest releases, bars, shops, small pool), young children kids club (2 sessions per day - our two daughters 8/5 enjoyed it and gave us a few hours peace and quiet),

comfortable surroundings to lounge around in,

cabin small but functional (basic room has 4 single beds, two are drop down wall mounted which kids slept on (we had an inner room out with no window and an outer room with window return (rooms identical apart from window and in my opinion the window is not a necessity) - ensuite bathroom, again small but functional),

all staff are Spanish but speak excellent English,

check in at both Portsmouth and Bilbao very simple and quick.

AGAINST -

Food availability in the self-serve canteen has a limited selection and choice - expensive for what it was and the food was sometimes coolish - all cooked with a Spanish flavour even though the majority of food offered was English style cuisine. They do have a posher restaurant but we didn't try it. There is a microwave in the canteen if you want to warm up your own food.

All prices are quoted in sterling (outward and return); would have been nice to know this as we would have kept some with us (you can pay in Euros which they convert at their exchange rate at the tills).

The point of your original question - it's too cheap there must be a catch. From our experience...

There isn't a catch, a cheap price, excellent modern ship, good facilities. Just make sure you take lots of extra things for the kids to do - games, colouring, portable dvds, gameboys etc. etc. to keep them entertained in the evenings. My second tip would be to take some food and snacks of your own (in a cool box - saw quite a few of them with other passengers) to last you the journey as to us the food situation was the only negative aspect of the journey (particularly with 2 fussy eating girls).

We were that pleased with the journey that I am booking with AT&T this coming summer.

Cooky
