Dear Alyson

We stayed there 2 years ago...and had a brilliant holiday. The site was very well organised without having the feel of a military regime, clean and tidy. The showers and loos were superb, extemely clean, piped music, hairdryers for us girlies! The pool complex is excellent for all ages, however it does get busy and there was always a queue to get in when it opened to grab a sunbed, but just plan ahead if the pool is on the agenda for the morning and send a couple of kiddlywinks with a pile of towels ahead (naughty but necessary!) We ate a couple of times in the restaurant which was good. The evening entertainment was pretty fine if you like a wander and a beer in the evenings, the Yelloh animators were really keen and obviously enjoyed what they did, and catered for all ages. Our 9 yr old would disappear, after dinner, to the sports area for the nightly multi national football match and meet us in the bar later, or find us back at the tent, and we were very confortable with that.

The beach was a bit of a hike along a busy ish road, there are a couple of bars and cafes on the front, and also car parks(free) if like us its easier to take the car that lug the gear. The sea is a surfers paradise, BUT not ideal for very little people as the waves can be extremely strong, it was very strictly life guarded which we were very happy about, and we had terrific fun in the sea!

Our pitch was huge, and to be honest most seemed pretty big, I think you can choose ahead and if thats the case I would select one a bit away from the central complex, as those seemed a bit smaller, noisier and dustier. The site is set in a lovely sort of pine forest, which gives some shade, but also allows the sun to shine through. We did have a problem with sap on the tent, but I'm not sure what we could have done about that. When we were there the shop wasnt huge, enough for your essential supplies, but a short drive takes you to a "Champion" and a bit further to a large "Le Clerc". We were there the first 1/2 August and the daytime weather was lovely and sunny, we did however have terrific thunderstorms on some nights.

All in all everyone looks for different things and this is just my opinion, but we have kept all the site plans and info, and fully intend to return, maybe next year. (venturing to spain this year)

Hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we did, and if I can tell you anymore just ask!

Clare

Hi Alyson

I'd get it booked pronto. I fancied this site last year, and tried to book at about this time for three weeks peak summer, but all they had left was the pitch next to the toilet block near the animations bit, which I didn't fancy. So we ended up down the road at Messanges where we'd been before, and that's still one we like. We got the same thunderstorms, rough sea and sap issues as clare.

I haven't come across many sites that send you a site plan when at the booking stage for you to see if you're happy with the pitch location, as they do at Sylvamar. In my case lucky they did...

As I always say to anyone going this neck of the woods, make sure you do La Rhune (mountain railway with spectacular views) and nearby St Jean De Luz (very pretty town with good shops). Also the Fete at Bayonne, which isn't for the faint hearted, and this year is 1st-5th Aug.

TT

Hi TT.

Wise move not too take that pitch, I can imagine where it would be, and aside of the loo block, and central complex noise, we noted that some of those pitches also were downwind of the restaurant kitchen extractor fan...not pleasant in the heat of the day or the stillness of the late evening!

Suspect for prime time next year we will have to think about booking around Nov, bet you could pop in this year while you are in the area, choose a pitch and reserve for next year!

Hi Alyson

My plan of Sylvamar doen't show pitch numbers, sorry. Best to contact them and teel them want you want, you never know.

As for the Fete de Bayonne, best way to get a flavour of what it's about is to look at the website; there are videos and photos of last years fete. Just click the link in my previous post. The most popular time seems to be the Friday night / Saturday / Saturday night. Don't forget your white trousers...

TT.

Camped here for three weeks last summer. Had a great time. Beach is one of the best we've ever been to but the waves do get bad. They shut the beach on a couple of days whilst we were there due to high waves.

Campsite is very well organised - complete mixture of nationalities. Pool complex is excellent but suffers with the 'german' towel on a sunbed syndrome. The pool, although large, gets very busy.

Outstanding site for kids (ours loved it)as there is a lot going on. The whole site is situated in a pine forest. Our tent ended up being covered in pine sap.

If you take the AT&T ferry rout to Bilbao, it's only 1.5 hours round the corner.

I think I've still got the site booklet and map they gave out when we arrived - pm me if you would like a scanned in copy. cooky at cookyrj.idps.co.uk
