Big-fin i havent done it but a possible route would be M74-M6-M5 to Plymouth (better than M25).

Ferry Plymouth-Roscoff (6 hours)then take the coast road N165 which is dual carriageway with good service stations on route.Exits to all the Brittany towns are good.I found this route quietier than the approach from Caen or Rennes though i have not used the ferry i have used the roads.Just did a quick quote with Brittany ferries 15thJuly-28th July,2 adults,2 kids 4 berth cabin £798-not cheap but you could try the C Club or C&CClub for cheaper quote

  cheers......just booked it through the cc. going on brittany ferries. poole to cherburg daytime return for £295, and campsite £50 cheaper than booking direct, going on the 12th....result.the ferry changes drastically from port to port, and times. saved £75 by going at 12 instead of 8am.??????

last year was stuck on m25 carpark, and m6 too last year....not my idea of a holiday start.
