Cheapest western channel crossings I found are the Sunday-only service Portsmouth to Cherbourg with Condor (this is a normal ferry, not Fast Craft ), or the daytime HD Lines Le Havre - Portsmouth service. It's still a couple of hours drive to N Brittany though. I don't have a caravan, but the total for my family came to just over £75 each way compared with over £500 quoted by Brittany Ferries.
Big-fin i havent done it but a possible route would be M74-M6-M5 to Plymouth (better than M25).
Ferry Plymouth-Roscoff (6 hours)then take the coast road N165 which is dual carriageway with good service stations on route.Exits to all the Brittany towns are good.I found this route quietier than the approach from Caen or Rennes though i have not used the ferry i have used the roads.Just did a quick quote with Brittany ferries 15thJuly-28th July,2 adults,2 kids 4 berth cabin £798-not cheap but you could try the C Club or C&CClub for cheaper quote

cheers......just booked it through the cc. going on brittany ferries. poole to cherburg daytime return for £295, and campsite £50 cheaper than booking direct, going on the 12th....result.the ferry changes drastically from port to port, and times. saved £75 by going at 12 instead of 8am.??????
last year was stuck on m25 carpark, and m6 too last year....not my idea of a holiday start.
When I was in Brittany last year in June, I got talking with a guy from Ulster who had found it cheaper by a country mile to book flights on one of the budget airlines out of Belfast to one of the airports in the area - it might have been Nantes, Rennes or Lorient - not sure. He then rented a car and a static caravan in the area of his choice which in this case was Trinite sur Mer.
He reckoned that he had saved himself something to the order of £350.00 but the real beauty of his plan was that it only took him a morning and a bit to get to his holiday.
You might like to look at this idea from Glasgow. You never know, you may be able to save yourself a bundle. Airlines like EasyJet, Ryanair, Flybe, BMIBaby all fly to provincial airports in France.
