This is a Castels site located in the northern Dordogne about an hour from Perigueux. We are thinking of going there in late June with our teenage daughters. Would appreciate any feedback from people who have been there. A few specific questions:

Enough to keep the teenagers (14 and 13) entertained during the low season?

Much in the way of scope for day trips around the area. We stayed in the Loire valley two years ago, this region kind of strikes me as a "hilly" version of the Loire.

It being a Castels site I am sure it will be fairly well run, however, any specifics at all would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Hi,
Don't be too reassured by the 'Castels' brand ... we stayed on a Castels site, Les Hauts de Ratebout, assuming it would be like others we'd stayed on and it was a great disappointemnt = it was more like a Butlins = noisy very late into every night with loud entertainment and discos so that no-one seemed to bother being quiet on their pitches either. It had recently been taken over by Dutch owners.
So continue to see if you can find some reviews before you book.

Went to this site last year, got there and found the "big" pitch that had been reserved for us had a tree in the middle of and there was no way our pathfinder would fit. Site owner admitted making a mistake and after a while found us a "really good" pitch. This pitch was in an area recaimed from the woods, was so wet, even late July, that the jocky wheel sunk to its axle andt cap it all we were overlooked by a toilet block on ground some 10 feet above our pitch.

Needless to say and to be fair to the owner we got our money back after just one night and went elsewhere.

Impressions of the site - seemed to offer good facilities, pool, bar etc and there were some nice pitches around the site, major turn off for me was that being run by Dutch owners, everone spoke to you in English, go to the shop - English, go to the bar - English, go to reception - english. Now, whilst my French isn't great, I do go to France expecting to have to speak a little French!
