We are due to travel to southern Spain at the end of May, travelling on a motorcycle via the channel tunnel and tent camping as we go, we will be travelling light (except for tent, sleeping bags etc) and buying food as we go. We have a tomtom navigator and are ready to book eurostar and spend about 3 days travelling each way with a few days staying in the south of Spain before starting our journey back. We have done similar shorter trips in the UK but nothing like this abroad.

I have read a lot of links regarding advice, bandits, municipal sites, European insurance cards (E111type) etc.

However has anyone done a similar type of journey on a motorbike or any really helpful advice to help us make the journey as pleasurable and safe as we possibly can ?

--E111 cards can be got online-see thread at top of page--it would also be good to get extra health insurance-not expensive for a couple of weeks--you dont go on Eurostar with a motorbike-its a passenger train-try Eurotunnel or the Dover/Calais ferries--work out your route then google the towns you may stop near to find campsites--most large French towns have a camping municipal-in Spain travel by day & aim to be on a campsite by late afternoon--theres loads of campsites all down the Spanish coast-but few inland--

Cheers billy, we have already got the E111 cards. Sorry about the Eurostar, a slip of the finger, I meant the Eurotunnel which is quite cheap for a bike. What about these villains then, Im travelling on a quite expensive bike, is there a need to be worried ??? (more than normal I mean). We are not sure if to book campsites up front as this will mean having to reach the site by the end of the day, but the good thing about the TomTom is that you can programme it to show campsites. So as you approach a town they should show.

Its just that the more threads I seem to read to more apprehensive...............

Benson.

--dont book campsites in May--theres no need--theres nothing wrong with Spain just take normal precautions--ie dont leave an expensive bike parked in Barcelona & go sightseeing--the bike may be gone when you get back--the well known Spanish coastal resorts seem to getting a reputation for crime but they are only a tiny part of Spain-so you should have no problems--Spanish drivers tend to drive very fast but traffic volumes are far lower than in the UK--inland Spain is great for driving-long straight empty roads--

WE have travelled to Benidorm on a Harley Davidson Road King Classic in 2001.via the channel tunell.

Faro in Portugal 2003 via the pride of Bilboa.

Lorette de Marr in 2004 via the over night ferry

All journeys on the same bike,Benidorm, and Lorrete de Marr, travelled with wife pillion and mate and his wife.

Faro we travelled with 127 other motorcyclists. on all these journeys we never had any trouble other than one garage attendant tried to rip me off big style, £4 pounds worth of petrol he tried to charge me the equivalent of £26. We just stopped at sites  or hotel when we got tired.

What an experiance, go for it.

Regards John.
