A ban will operate in the UK from 1st July 2007, in all public buildings. I work for Southeastern trains and it will be prohibited to smoke anywhere on the station. That includes platforms and station approaches. No more picking up fag ends hooray!!. I see problems though trying to enforce it as lots of people smoke on the station whilst waiting for their trains and then throw the fag ends on the platform.

As a "considerate smoker", ie I always go outside and stay down wind of everybody, might a solution to the litter caused by fag ends not be reduced by providing bins.
Britain is abolutely useless at providing these, yet everyone complains about the litter. This is very noticeable when returning from the continent where the problem seems to far less, or even nil.
Jim.

I thought that had already been answered? Ask yourself Jim, what would you rather pick up: A fag end or an IED? This is the reason that litter bins were removed was that the Wicked People wanted to place bombs in them. Trust me when I say that a fag packet full of P.E. would certainly ruin your day!

You mean in England of course. We have had our own smoke-free legislation in Scotland (part of the UK) for a year now. I believe Wales starts next week and NI at the end of April. But with England at the proverbial Coo's Tail there will be varying versions of the ban operating in the four home nations.
The ban was introduced with no real problems up here but a year later its implementation and enforcement is still being worked on - the screw is ever tightening however I am pleased to say. Next target for me would be to get them away from doorways (they shouldn't be there but it is not being enforced strongly enough YET!

So we discourage people from smoking: OK, no problem. Got to get your revenue from somewhere.
If the population lives longer then more pension money will have to be paid so prepare for lots of tax increases. Its another win/win situation for the Government - LOL
Living longer is not a problem as long as that life is healthier and thus less expensive to the public purse. The economically active life of future generations will be longer in any case. I am sure I am not alone is wishing for teh day when we get absolutely no tax revenue at all from teh tobacco industry and if that means other sources are found that is just fine and dandy.
