Hi

We are going to Spain this month, for 2 weeks, via the bilboa ferry, and are having trouble finding insurance in case of a  breakdown.

We have a Swift Kontiki, and most insurance companies say that the 7.3 mts is too long for the recovery trucks, so they wont provide cover, others say that the 3,800 kg is too heavy!!

Any one know of an insurance company that would cover us?

Just looked on Safeguard website and it says they will do breakdown cover - no restrictions on the size of motorhome - with the AA.  However, when I rang AA this afternoon they told me that our kontiki was too large and could not cover us!!

Thanks for replying though!!

Hi, the AA cover when provided by Safeguard does not have the restrictions imposed by the AA if you book direct with the AA. It's an anomaly or something like that, but you would be better to ring Safeguard and talk it over with them. I think they can meet your requirements.

Phil.

Just telephoned Switons (aka Safeguard) and they say that you have to take out the uk policy and the european breakdown cover is included.

You cant take out european cover separately!!

Have you looked at the Caravan Club Red Pennant. Generally considered the best and the one others are judged by! Would not go to Europe without it.

Hi John and Ann,

Last year we were faced with the same problem (breakdown cover for the continent)

Having looked all over I finished up with 'More Than' run by Royal Sun Alliance.

I got UK cover with Continetal cover thrown in for free. I was looking at it again today because we're off over La Manche for a month in March. It ticks enough boxes for me and I've admitted to 15thou miles a year in a 2.5 tdi car so a motor caravan shouldn't be much more if any. I paid £56 for the year all up.

I can heartily recommend AXA european breakdown insurance.  Believe me - when your clutch fails without warning at 7pm on a saturday night in the wheatfields of france, you find out the strength of your policy!  Especially when you are towing a caravan on your own with three children.

For about £38 cost of cover  they paid for breakdown trucks, taxis to and from the car dealers, all my accomodation at the campsite, everything.  I can honestly say it was the best £38 I ever spent!https://www.travelcoverquote.com/vrcuk/STindex.asp

Depends how old you are ... if one of you is over 50 then SAGA is good and less expensive than others.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think i should have clarified that we are driving a motorhome that is 3.2mts in hieght, 7.3mts long and a kerbwieght of  3800kg

The AXA european breakdown insurance, has this limit, so that is no good;

  • Vehicles must not exceed 1.9m in height, 5.1m in length, 2.1m in width, and are under 3500kg kerb weight. (Trailer or Caravan Max dimensions: 8m long x 3m height x 2.25 wide)
