We are planning to go camping in france in 2008,currently prices between midnight and 0600 are the cheapest fares, do you just turn up and go on the next train or do you have to book a particular train.
Also what is the policy on gas bottles? we normally take 2 x 907 bottles for cooking ect

Sapper, when we went we were booked on the 7.30am ex Folkestone but were in time for the 7.00am so they put us on it. As for gas, they check what you have is turned off, in our case 2 x 6kg propane bottles. On return, again we were in time for the earlier train and the same happened
I used eurotunnel last year and we also took 2 x 907s with no problem. We had to declare them and they were inspected on the way out so it is worth having them accessible. I personally would not put them in the topbox and always carry them in the boot
We had booked a specific shuttle but whether you travel on that one depends on how busy they are. You may get on an earlier one but as happened on the way back we got on a slightly later one because they were very slow partly due to security measures and partly due to the skeleton staff they had due to financial difficulties. Despite this it is still quicker than a ferry
If you are taking a topbox, you may need to see if you still fit into the under 1.85m high category for cars when you are booking. Otherwise you may need to go in the high space carriages I think. Can anyone with a top box advise?

I always booked as a normal car but travelled with a top box. When you go through check-in you then have a choice of which route to take, over hight or not. It has never been a problem and you are then just directed to the high train.
I would definitely book as a high vehicle if you are over 1.85m. I don't think it costs any more but it is a bit risky not to declare it at the time of booking

Absolutely right, declare your overheight vehicle as it costs no extra to take it across-you will then be guaranteed an overheight berth
I can second this advice, we travel this way 3 times a year.
Also remember you have a weight restriction on your topbox, most of them are about 50kg, so putting gas bottles into a topbox is not advisable.

Sapper - will your gas bottles be in an upright position in your 'topbox'? Isn't there a safety issue about carrying gas bottles in anything but the upright position?
I probably wont take the large bottles, i will be taking 470/206 canisters, thats why i incuded topbox on my post. We normally use slow cooker or electric grill oven for cooking. We use the full camping kitchen when the rest of the family join us.
The O/H intends to drag me to resturants at night and i will be expected to pay!
Reading this with great interest as we are doing this too! I think the height restriction is 1m85 as far as I remember (my DH's height, very handy!) and by the time our car is packed up it'll be well under this I'm sure! Our Peugeot 406 with top box is well under this normally so unless you have an MPV or 4x4 or similar you should be ok.
