Am thinking of going for a week camping in Ireland.  Have already sourced a site in west Ireland (Mannix Point) but am having trouble finding a site in the east of Ireland.

Anybody have any suggestions for Wicklow or Kilkenny areas.  Needs to be within walking distance of village or pub.

Also, is the electric hook up the same as in the UK? (when responding, please bear in mind my novice status with all things electrical!)

Cheers

Ade

EHU is the same. There is a site called Hidden Valley at Rathdrum, a village in the Wicklow mountains. There are several others in the area which we didn't stay at but might be worth a look as I didn't think Hidden Valley was great.

There is also a site called Wolhohans Silver Strand, don't know what the site is like and it appears to be out in the wilds a bit although only a few miles from Wicklow town and it is above a lovely beach.

Mannix Point is about a mile from Cahersiveen which has pubs with music and food, and cash points. There is a better (in my opinion) site near Caherdaniel, Wave Crest, there is a pub along the road at the next caravan site just about within walking distance. The nearest cash point and garage to here is about 10 miles away.

I think you might be pushing it a bit to do the west and east of Ireland in 1 week though.

Look under www.camping-ireland.ie    Tree Grove Kilkenny is within walking distance of Kilkenny town and the town is certainly worth a visit but the site does get very busy.

We stayed at River Valley Caravan Park in Redcross. There is an on-site restaurant and a modern rustic bar with open fire and weekly traditional music. The park is good for kids, has tennis courts, golf, snooker tables and lots more. It is also near famous tourist attractions eg the village of Avoca where Ballykissangel was made, the meeting of the waters, Glendalough and plenty of other places.

Thanks for all the responses.  Very much appreciated.

We're going to spend a few days in the River Valley site (Hidden Valley is closed until the 26th May 2007 due to refurbishment).  We'll then drive down to Mannix Point.

Reviews, of course, to follow (electrocution notwithstanding)

A word on EHU in Ireland....it seemed to me that most sites had much lower powered EHU than here.

We often camp in Ireland while rallying with our Morris Minor. Basically all good campsites but twice we have come across well advertised sites whose EHU points were nothing more than 13 amp indoor household sockets, dangling at the end of mains grey cable.

July and August are thee main holiday months in Ireland and many pubs in country areas do not open at other times of the year. You will probably be OK in villages in the evening but if you are anything like us and like our Pub Lunches, you'll starve to death in the wilds of Ireland.

Again, thanks for the replies.

My girlfriend and I are quite new to this camping lark and it's our first year using EHU, so it's all very hit and miss at the moment - but then that's part of the adventure I guess!
