Your best plan is probably to get the MOT done before you go and get it forward dated 1 month if it is a renewal. That way you will lose least time and stay legal.
I agree with Jennifer. We are about to do exactly that, MOT on Friday tho not due til mid May, but we are going away 27/3 for 3 months., so had to be done tho, and next year it'll fall at the right time. Car Ins also been a nightmare, and basicly have had to 'loose' 3 months ins (not much of a refund) as it expires while we are away. No prepared to renew without a quote either. Also, current insurer only covered for 90days total in the year abroad, so have now gone with Caravan Club. Believe that Saga offer longer stays as well. Need to check travel (health ins) as well, had to pay extra for longer stay. Road tax I believe can be done on website, I imagine you can do this at an internet cafe if you're happy to do a financial transaction there. Happy hols.
Yes your insurance would be void if your MOT runs out (or Tax)
I agree with jennifernn, get it MOTed before you go (you can get 13 months on it).
I believe you can also apply to renew your road tax up to 3 months before it's due, providing you write to the tax people explaining why you want to do this.
Just seen the above post- Saga car insurance gives unlimited European use.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
It wont affect me this year (unless we get the right 6 numbers), just dreaming of hitching a folding camper to a convertable Golf and hitting the Med coast - Italy > France > Spain > Portugal for a decent break away!
Been going through the same loop.........
Depart 30th Apr, return 8th Aug but car tax and insurance expire 31st July (now there's forward planning for you). You can apply on-line to renew car tax early, but only 2 months, which is not early enough for us. Solution? Returned my tax disc on 28th Feb for a 5 month refund and re-taxed the car on 1st March. Car is insured with Saga (no limit on number of days abroad). Having spoken with them at some length about what options are available, have settled on an annual direct debit. I will ring them late July from wherever we happen to be and they will fax a copy of the new certificate. CC Red Pennant Motoring & Personal covers us for breakdown/health etc issues (but see thread about travel insurance for long trips abroad).
Don't forget about house insurance (ours only covers us for 60 days unoccupied, but we will have house-sitters).

Road tax you can do online. It's easy-peasy if you've got new-style docs.

I don't think it is that easy, It's illegal to drive a car that doesn't display a valid Tax Tax Disk. I don't think the DVLA will post your new Tax Disk to a Camp site in France or Spain. (But I could be wrong)
We have purposely got our new car 1st March to try and avoid this in future, and also started a new insurance 1st March. All our other cars have been 1st September so have been a problem in the past.
It's not really something you think about when buying a vehicle, is it!?
