We are thinking of camping in france this summer.

We have never done this before.

Any good sites? We prefer peace and quiet, usually going to adult only sites here in the UK. A site with just a nice pitching place, good loos and showers and somewhere to wash up is great by us.

France has probably more campsites than any other country in Europe so its difficult to answer your question as you need to be a bit more specific. You say summer but is this July/August?  If so this is the time when sites are at their fullest. If you want quiet sites I would go along with Billy's suggestion of using Municipals.

Just to add to the above, France is such a big place, with thousands of campsites, and so it really is important to decide where your ultimate destination is - Mediterranean or Atlantic beaches, Mountains or Gorges, inland Chateaux, mediaeval villages,wine, lakes, marshes or whatever.  Then people can advise on sites with those locations in mind.  Do you have an idea of where you want to end up - and what route you're planning? 

If you're going outside July to mid-August then almost all sites, even the largest, busiest ones, tend not to be crowded - and can be on par with adult only sites in England.  Almost(!!!!) all sites we've visited have better loos and shower blocks than in England - even the municipal ones. and pitches tend to be more 'private' than in England - often being separated from other pitches by hedges, trees or shrubs.  Even the most basic sites have hook-ups on almost all pitches, and often more water points than in England.

There are some fantastic sites around but it would be helpful to know just a few more details to give best advice.

Why not get a copy of a Eurocamp/keycamp style brochure and have a look at the various areas in France to give you an idea of where you want to go.  Once you decide where then look at the campsite search on here.  Four years ago we like you were first timers, France is a lovely place and driving is easy once you get the hang of it.

As for where in France we are not big hot places people and love lakes and mountains. Probably prefer the car train thing as I hate boats!!!! so northern Franceish is probably for us.

The Vosges mountain area in northern France, over near the German border is a beautiful region. Northern temperatures and quieter sites than the larger coastal or tourist region sites. Good access from the Tunnel as well if you dont like ferries.

For a first timer Northern France is a good place to start of especcially if you catch the weather right. You can spend hours trawlling through internet sites, buying books etc to be honest just pick an area you wanna go to n just jump in the car and go. If you want quite sites there are thousands no real need to book even peak season August just turn up (wing it).
