Just to add to the above, France is such a big place, with thousands of campsites, and so it really is important to decide where your ultimate destination is - Mediterranean or Atlantic beaches, Mountains or Gorges, inland Chateaux, mediaeval villages, wine, lakes, marshes or whatever. Then people can advise on sites with those locations in mind. Do you have an idea of where you want to end up - and what route you're planning?
If you're going outside July to mid-August then almost all sites, even the largest, busiest ones, tend not to be crowded - and can be on par with adult only sites in England. Almost(!!!!) all sites we've visited have better loos and shower blocks than in England - even the municipal ones. and pitches tend to be more 'private' than in England - often being separated from other pitches by hedges, trees or shrubs. Even the most basic sites have hook-ups on almost all pitches, and often more water points than in England.
There are some fantastic sites around but it would be helpful to know just a few more details to give best advice.
