Are the wee GB stickers incorporated into some number plates good enough for the authorities when travelling on the continent, or do I need to get stick on/magnetic ones?

Provided the GB number plates are made to EU regs they are perfectly legal in Europe & look much better than sticking a GB sticker on the car body--all other European countries have these type of plates--

EEC Regulations accept the Euro Stars and GB as being valid in the Eurozone. No other GB stickers are required
Any other symbols such as the Cross of St George and ENG or the Saltire with SCO, dragon with WALES or Arsenal Man Utd etc are definately banned. (As they are in the UK)

Stickers are fine, but regulations are very strict, as Rostrevor says, on what a numberplate can have on it. Not to mention size of letters and the spacings etc etc.

You are allowed to have the Union Jack, Welsh Dragon etc on your number plate. However the only symbol that does not require a seperate GB sticker when travelling in the EU is the eurostars symbol with GB. Hope this helps.

Since when and by whom?


This subject has been raised on other forums.   Knowing that there is only certain information which can legally be displayed on number plates, I contacted DVLA for clarification. as follows-
"The Government announced on 28 December 2001 the intention to permit the display of national flags and symbols on vehicle number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are in the process of being amended and should be in place by the end of 2002. They will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon. Football team crests etc are not allowed."


Were these amendments ever put into place?

Due to legislative issues, the regulations have yet to be passed, and whilst I can assure you that enforcement authorities are aware of the Governments intention to allow for such number plates, I should stress that responsibility for enforcing the above regulations rest with the police and other enforcement agencies. The Agency cannot give an authoritative statement regarding the law on this issue, as matters of law remain for the courts to decide.

Not forgetting of course that only last year someone was prosecuted for displaying the Cross of St George and ENG
The law is still on the statute books and there is still a penalty of upto £1000 for displaying an illegal number plate.

As you are a regular visitor to Switzerland which is not in the EU are they happy to accept (legal) EU plates without the need for a separate GB sticker?

If you are going to a non EU country eg. switzerland you need a proper oval GB sticker.

Was gonna post that cause Dave said it's better to take one to be on the safe side so you might as well stick one on.  Ours is still on the car from last year so will save us sticking one on this year lol

GB Sticker - you must be joking!

Over the last 20 years we've driven all over Europe.  We've never had anything other than a CYM (Cymru - Pays de Galles) sticker on our car.

Never had any problem and have always received a warm welcome.

Quite happy to be a Welsh European,
