May or September.
May is pre-midge season, the clocks have gone forwards, there are many beautiful gardens to visit because it’s rhododendron season & there’s usually a good spell of clear sunny weather.
We’ve been having a glorious Indian Summer for weeks now. October can be beautiful (autumn colours against cobalt blue skies, maybe snowy peaks too) but days are shorter & sites start to close.
Caveat - the far north is awesome in the height of summer because we get the “simmer dim”, it doesn’t go dark, I’ve read a book beside the sea loch at Ullapool at midnight while OH gave the dog her bedtime walk, the fishing boats were chugging back in. Midges can be a massive problem in summer but not everywhere or all the time - 6pm and no breeze is awful, but that midnight outside was insect free; anywhere near bracken or bog will be a problem, I had to wear a midge hood to go round the beautiful botanical gardens at Poolewe, but midges don’t bother OH and I take an antihistamine tablet at night: sorted.
Just check online about using how to drive on single track roads with passing places - look & plan ahead, stop first if you’re about to pass somewhere or the vehicle nearest the passing place reverses to it (unless it’s a timber lorry), go into the lay-by on your side or stop opposite one if it’s on the other side - don’t cross over the road to it. And never ever park in one. And always acknowledge the other driver(s) - how, varies: first finger lifted off the steering wheel in Mull; the “Ballachulish nod” in Argyll; full palm raised; eye contact & head nod; sometimes a toot of the horn; it doesn’t matter, but do something.
------------- 2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.

Definitely May in my opinion, when we have brighter days, lighter nights and better weather than September.

Depends where you are going. Never get midges on the Moray coast and its very quiet even in July.

September is a good month. We have had some of the hottest days when away in September. Fife and the Borders is our chosen areas.
