What pipe are you using between the tap and the van?
We had 1 of the Blue food grade (allegedly) pipes and the water always tasted funny.
Got some clear pipe as used in Pubs, breweries, etc. Problem solved.

Use Puriclean to sterilise your hose and caravan water system. We just did ours yesterday. For the hose, we put a couple of teaspoons of Puriclean in a large jug of water and once well dissolved, we slowly poured it into the hose until it started to come out the other end. We then secured it so the solution wouldn’t come out and left it for two hours before flushing through with fresh water. You wouldn’t believe the murky water that comes out with the first flush through!

I’m not sure how you would do the Caravan if you use the direct water connection. We use an aquaroll which makes sterilisation simple so you may need to borrow one if you don’t have one or use some other large container. On Friday at home we put 10 teaspoons of Puriclean into a jug and dissolved it in lukewarm water before adding it to the full aquaroll and giving it a good shake. We left the aquaroll overnight to make sure it was really well cleaned and then drained and rinsed yesterday before leaving home. When we arrived on site yesterday, we then half filled the aquaroll again and added 5 teaspoons of dissolved Puriclean. We connected up the pump to the aquaroll and pumped the Puriclean solution into the caravan pipework until the water tank was full and the solution was coming out of all the taps. We then left the solution in the pipework for 2 hours. Puriclean say you can leave it for between 1 and 12 hours and I would have liked to have left it longer than 2 hours but we didn’t arrive on site until mid afternoon so didn’t have as long as I would have liked. After the two hours we turned on the taps and ran the rest of the drum of Puriclean through the system until the drum was empty. Again, it is amazing to see the murky water that comes out when you first turn on the taps. We then opened the draindown valve and let the Puriclean drain out of the water tank. Once it was completely drained we rinsed the aquaroll and connected it up to the fresh water and to the caravan and reprimed the water system with fresh water. We pumped a load of fresh water through the system and out the taps to make sure that the Puriclean is well rinsed out and now we have a nice clean and sterilised water system. We do this twice a year and have never had any problems with the water in the caravan.

If cleaning the water system make sure you replace the filter. If using the caravan a lot, the filter should be changed every 3-4 months. Prior to delivery we asked the dealer to remove the filter as a waste of money.

If you are drinking the water from the tap in your van, you really need to sterilise the system periodically, once or twice a season at very least. Puriclean, as Pixie explained is the favoured way for most of us. There is a horrible amount of 'biofilm' algae that builds up in the plastic plumbing!

The supply hose from the standpipe is a problem as awkward to ensure all internal surfaces treated, ideally needs the treatment fluid circulated through it for a while!

As to the filter! If a Truma Ultraflow type, then Truma advise replacing it after 35 days from FIRST use! At around £12-16 a go, that adds up! - My service engineer, and a good many others too, say it's more of a health risk in itself (it WILL grow nasties if not replaced periodically!) than a benefit, advised to throw away and NOT replace, as site water supplies just as good as your supply at home!
