Driving across the A69
The road that connects
Newcastle and Carlisle
I followed a caravan across the road.
The road is single carriage way with average speed cameras in stretches, the caravan
Was average speed was about 55/60 miles per hour.
Please correct me if I'm wrong BUT surely the cameras would be able to define he was towing ?

Doubt it very much as they registered the number plate and doubt whether the police would be bothered that is if the person viewing the photo is even aware that caravans are limited to 50mph on single carriageway..

It's no different to motorway speed cameras as the trigger point is set to 70 mph. which records the vehicle registration number whatever vehicle it is, therefore anyone towing a trailer or caravan at say 68 mph. wouldn't be detected even though it is against the law to tow a trailer over 60 mph. on motorways and dual carriageways.

If towing picture of you speeding will be the rear of the caravan and if they had the desire and knowledge they could prosecute. Ask me how I know although my incident was on an A road.

Our average speed & speed cameras are set to the mph on the road signs, 30mph in built up areas, 20mph by schools. But there’s a 10% margin of error, so you’d be ok up to 55mph in a 50mph area. A friend has his car cruise control set at 77mph for the long M-way journeys he does for work, just has to watch going downhill.

Some do, some don't, mine doesn't. I do have to watch it on downhill stretches as it will soon run away with me if I don't. It keeps very accurately to the set speed on the level or uphill though.

It isn't a myth it is just that not all forces follow the ACPO guidelines on speeding tolerances.
These apply the 10% + 2MPH limit:

Avon and Somerset, Cheshire, Cleveland, Derbyshire, Devon and Cornwall, Durham, Gwent, Hampshire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Merseyside, Metropolitan Police (TFL), Norfolk, North Wales, Northumbria, Northern Ireland, South Wales, South Yorkshire, Suffolk, Thames Valley, Warwickshire, West Mercia, and West Yorkshire.
