I collected my two year old Bailey Senator Indiana from its annual service a couple of weeks ago and I was told it needs all the 3 front windows replacing because they have 'blown',  on asking what this meant I was told that the plastic has bulged out and eventually the the seals will fail, I was also told this was not an uncommon occurence on a variety of vans.  Has anyone heard of this before and does anyone know what causes it and how to avoid it happening again, or is it a manufacturing fault?

Fortunately the windows replacement is covered by waranty but I am worried in case it happens again in 2-3 years time after the warranty expires and I will be liable for this cost which I assume will be quite expensive.

Not usually sealed units - there's a grommet in most d/g units you can remove if they "steam up" until they clear - do it on a fine mild windy day.

Never heard of "blown" units other than home sealed glass d/g units.  But you learn something new every day.  Unless of course we've learned something new about your dealer?

Isn't the whole point of this forum for people to ask for advice?

This way people can look earlier posts up and learn from them.

I think it would be a good idea to get a definitive answer form Bailey. Our windows lasted 18 years probably because they never got hot just wet!

I already emailed Bailey earlier today and have asked them to explain what exactly is meant by blown windows and what is the cause, however my previous experience of contacting caravan manufacturers, i.e. Avondale and Bailey indicates I will either wait a long while for a reply or not get one at all (after sales customer service does not seem to be a strong point!).  I thought someone on this site may have already experienced this problem and may have an explanation.

Rest assured when I get a reply from Bailey I will post it here.

Yes but like I say, the units are not sealed there should be a neat hole drilled in the inner sheet with a grommet in it so that any condensation between the sheets can be cleared. You can pull out the grommet and a bit of hair dryer treatment all over the window and over the hole does the trick then stick the grommet back. (Look carefully and you'll find it)

Has anyone ever heard of blown units? I haven't.  By the way, one of mine is cracked near the catch.  I thought I might squeeze in a thin line of superglue along the crack but I'm not sure it would do any good? No real harm done and I certainly won't replace the unit unless it gets much worse.

Any experience anyone?

I said I would let everyone know how I got on with this one. Unfortunately, my correspondence with Bailey has remained unanswered and I am still waiting (nearly six months later) for the replacement windows. When I contacted the dealers again in January, I was told that Bailey had lost the order for the replacement windows and that they had resubmitted it, but I am still waiting for the windows to arrive at the dealers. Is this wait for parts typical of Bailey or is it caravan manufacturers generally. Fortunately the lack of the replacement windows doesn't stop the caravan being used, had a great week in France at easter, despite the cold, wet weather.

We wouldn't accept this poor after sales service from car manufacturers, how come caravan manufacturers are able to get away with it ?

Mainly becuase people let them get away with it.  I was guilty of this and let things slide but when it got a bit much I contacted the dealer in writing and advised that I was suing for damages etc.  I also contacted the HP company and I advsied that as the caravan was not in a satisfactory condition, I woud consider withholding paymenst until all faults were rectified.  Within a week, the caravn was collected, a loan caravan given and all faults rectified wthin a month. This also included the caravan going back to the factory for a major adjustment.

Use the power of the law or lose out forever!  The Sales of Goods Act is a very powerful piece of legislation and I suggest you use it against your dealer to get the windows repaired ASAP and also claim compensation.

Hi Peter. I too have been told that my windows on my Bailey Bordeaux have blown and the most likely cause is prolonged direct sunlight. I assume from that that the windows have been in this condition for some time as the last certainly before we bought it.

I bought the caravan in October last year so the fault must have bneen in place when we bought it from the dealer. I am taking the uissue up with the dealer in Birmingham although the caravan is now stored in Cornwall. I heard by the service agent that Bailey only offer a 12 month warranty on the windows anyway so the dealer may play hardball even though he should have checked them before it was sold.
