how would you sleep them in a caravan, we have a travel cot but think it would be too big. we have 2 side bunks & there will be an older child sleeping on the bottom..would it be advisable to sleep a 6month on the top bunk if so how do you secure them besides the normal side rail? does anyone do this we are away next week & the baby will sleep in with us for a couple of nights
Some years ago we had a clippa safe sleeping bag with D rings & fixings for the bed allowing them some movement but it kept them on the bed, I don't think they do them now any suggestions?
I absolutely definitely WOULDN'T put a six month old baby in the top bunk, not in any circumstances. If the baby fell out (and this is possible whatever precautions you might take) that sort of a fall might easily kill it or cause serious damage.
I'm not sure what sort of layout your van has, but there must be an available floor space somewhere where you could make up a bed for the baby. I know when my sister borrowed our van, when their youngest was small, the travel cot was rigged up in front of the kitchen area.
I'm sure you can get very flexible travel cots now which would be manoeuvred into quite small spaces.

my partner has just come up with an idea we used last year, if you have a mosses basket or the pram addon to a push chair the littlen could sleep in that on the bunk, would stop them rolling out anywhere and you would sleep better knowing they were safe,
Would it be possible to put a bed guard on one of the bottom bunks?
If not i'm sure someone on here will come up with something for you. I'm sure you are not the first person to take a 6 month old in a caravan and you certainly will not be the last!
when we went we made up a bed using lots of blankets, etc and his baby sleeping bag on the floor between the two single beds. Couldn't fit our travel cot in the van but you can get much smaller ones now. Never put them on a top bank it is amazing how quickly they can roll.
I wouldn't have just put him on the the top bunk without some security that's why I was asking, OH can sleep on a single bed but I can't, his sister will be sleeping on the bottom bunk as she would be too big for the top, with the travel cot we have we wouldn't get by I don't think for the loo in the night, I have thought of one of those pop up travel cots like a minnie tent but am worried about any draft & not sure how wide they are either
I wouldn't just trust the bed guards without some other form of restraint either
As people have said please do not put your little one on the top bunk, trust me being in the ambulance service I have seen too many accidents with kiddies!
Our boy was about that age when he first went and we managed to get the travel cot in between the front single beds. It is a squeeze, as we had to open it and push down to fix in to position in between the beds. You can't slide or lower it in. Then my wife and i slept on the single beds, bit of a pain but he was safe and still close to my wife for feeding etc! How old is your other child as now he sleeps on the bottom bunk with a tomy portable bed side the supports can be extended in and out. he was in a sleeping bag upto this year so that kept him unable to riggle too much! Our 5 year old sleeps on top bunk. Hope this makes sense? regards
She is a 13year old, I would be worried of it collapsing onto the bottom bunk with a baby underneath even so a baby on the bottom bunk could fall out & be hurt if there was no restraint, I wouldn't do anything unless I was abosuletely sure!
Try putting the travel cot up in the middle. Put the cot in place and then open up and push down, it is a very tight fit and if you can manage you climb ino your bed there is enough room I'm 6'2 and managed it! lol
will have to get it out & give it a go I think suppose it will stop me falling out though! looks like I'm in for a weekend of no sleep, the things we do I hate sleeping on a single bed not wide enough for me.
I wish they still had those restraining sleeping bags I used them on all three of mine it stopped them falling out of bed in the night I got it from Boots they could sit up & roll either side but couldn't get off bit like a straight jacket the straps screwed in underneath the bed, had to do something my eldest was an escape artist he was walking at 10months
Hi, when our youngest was a baby (he is now 2) we just used to make up the double bed and remove the chest of drawers at the front, re arrange the cushions, put a bed guard under the cushions to stop him rolling over and he used to sleep up at the front of the caravan under the three windows, this meant we still had our double bed but with him at the side restrained by the bed guard so he could not escape. We now use two bed guards lengthways on the bottom single bunk and he shares a bed with his 5 year old brother with their 5 year old sister on the top bunk.
That's a thought the chest of drawers does come out, was the bed guard the one that comes with caravan or did you buy a seperate one, as we have never used or looked at ours never had the need. does it just hook under the cushion, that would keep him in his own space then. did your chest of drawers lie under the bunk? we could put it in the awning overnight though! will def. have a look at this
When we take our granddaughters with us (12 and 15) they are too big for us to use the side bunk beds. We make the big double bed up at the front and I sleep in that with the eldest, and the youngest sleep on the bottom bunk. My OH sleeps on the floor between the side bunk bed and kitchen on a blow up bed. We have enough room to walk past him in the night if the loo is needed.
