Hi could anyone help as we are towing a caravan from Birmingham to Barmouth in Wales and would like to know the best route, as we have never been there before,
I live in Sutton Coldfield so not in the middle of Birmingham, We did have our van on a site in the Isle of Wight for 7 months of the year and just close it up for the winter but the price went up so decided to bring it back so have never realy towed it to many places so thats why we were looking for an easy as poss route to Barmouth so any advice from you is very much appreciated
Hi Denise. We used to live near Birningham I would suggest M6 - M54 - A458 - A470 - A496. Keep to the North of the estuary or you will have to come back along the same road as the bridge is only a railway one.
I don't know what you are towing with but bear in mind there are hills in Wales. You shouldn't have a problem going this way if your outfit is O.K.
We'r going to Beddgelert (not far from Barmouth) next week, from wolves, going to shrewsbury on m54 then on the A5.
The A458 is very narrow, bendy and hilly! You dont want to tow up dinas mawddwy! Although the views are amazing!!! You could stay on A5 then near bala take the A494
P.S cant believe you haven't been to Barmouth before, living in Brum! Thought all us midlanders went there its lovely!
As 2kias. M6 M54 A458 A470 A496.Use this route often. Not too bad a tow but watch the downslope from the Top of Dinas Mawddwy ,it's longer and steeper than it looks. Safe trip. Enjoy Barmouth.
When i phoned the camp site they said the best way to go was Bala and then the A494, i remember as a chiled going to Wales with my mom and dad and being stuck behind caravans trying to get up the welsh hills, it was so funny seeing the husband driving and the wife sitting on the bonnet of the car trying to keep the front end down it is a picture that will stay with me forever

Hi Denise and John, can't believe you've asked the very same question I wanted to ask. I live in Burntwood and need to get to Barmouth - how did you get on last year ??
