Hi, we were coming home from our easter trip on Monday and just as we were pulling out of the campsite there was a small hill with a speed hump. We were driving slow but the jockey wheel (which is quite big) smacked into the hump and the alco stabiliser jumped off the tow bar and rolled back!! Luckily the brake away cable worked and the van stopped (thank god!!) What we want to know is, is this normal?? I said it cant have been put on properly but my other half said it wont lock if it is not on. He didnt have much confidence in it after that and stopped to check!! I will be buying a new breakaway cable and a spare now as although it worked if it happened again on the same journey we could have lost the van!! Really worried about the stabiliser though. Any advice anyone??

My mate's did the same driving out of a bumpy farmyard, and that was down to not getting it right over the towball. I'm certain of this because both of us left it to each other (too many cooks!!), and he drove another 400 miles without it coming off again.
The oh is right it won't lock if it's not on right, so it probably wasn't on right and locked.!! I'd put money on YOU being right.
There's so many things going on in the rush to get off, that these things happen. So I always have a final stroll round to see if everything is ok and nothing forgotten.

Ok thanks. It was down tho in the lock position but the car was on an angle when it was put on (tight pitch) and he did have trouble locking it so it musnt have been on right somehow!! Was scary tho!!

I ALWAYS get hold of the caravan draw-bar and lift it up once we have hitched up - if it lifts the back of the car with it, it's on properly (if you struggle to lift it enough, use the jockey wheel - same principle). I started doing this years ago when my ex-husband hadn't checked it and the folding camper came off the tow-ball. It IS very scary. Quick check every time will give you peace-of-mind.
Quite right. Always lift it a couple of times, use the jockey wheel if you have to. It certainly wasn't locked on properly, or that wouldn't have happened.
Always worth checking everything before you go. After we have pulled out of the pitch, we always stop and have a walk round where we've been, just to make sure everything's OK.

A couple of minutes checking locks, roof vents and hitches can save a lot of heartache.
I presume you moved the jockey wheel right up off the ground? I've left mine down before now. You must practice hitching on and off as this could have been dangerous if not deadly at 60mph.
Have you got an alko towball as well as an Alko hitch? Lots of people don't realise that the ball is different. It has a 'sharper' angle at the neck end and a longer neck, which allows the Alko hitch to grip properly. If you don't have this, then it could possibly have allowed the hitch to jump off the ball, especially if it was knocked from underneath.
The normal 'globe-shape' towball has to be replaced when you get an Alko hitch -with the special Alko towball which you can buy at any caravan dealer.
I have al-ko towball and al-ko hitch but managed once to lock down with the green button NOT showing, which may be what happened here. I always double check before setting off now.
We have an ALKO stabaliser and the dealer said the tow ball must be free of grease, could that be the cause. As said in posts, to lift up the caravan drawbar to check it is on right is a good tip, we will certainly do that in future. When we hitch I know my OH is thinking that other people will be watching and it does make you hurry a bit. When we hitched up last week the one-way site road was very narrow so we were blocking it and just like busses, no cars around and then two cars both wanting to come past at the same time. My OH got in and reversed back to let them pass and therefore forgot to wind up the jockey wheel. Fortunately our friends spotted that and told us or we may have driven home with it down.
Had it happen with a boat on a trailer many years ago, the trailer passed me on the inside as I was slowing down to turn into my drive, it went over a front lawn and hit a tree, that stopped it!
Inthe days before breakaway cables were fitted , or the trailer did,nt have one.
Since then I have always checked the hitch by lifting the draw bar, it scared me all right.
You need to have a sequence when hitching up, as stated it is good practice once hitched up to wind down jockey wheel & watch the back of the car rise up. If the hitch is properly on the ball it cannot come off.
I agree with karim, but it does worry me that the towball might be the wrong one & not the extended neck one needed, for alco's

YES we have the correct tow ball and hitch I cant remember if he lifted the drawbar up but always does and is usually very thorough, we dont care who is watching!! The Jockey wheel WAS right up as well as I say it is a large wheel I think we will buy a smaller one. We are very experienced and been vanning over 10 year and this is why we were so shocked. It cant have been on right obviously or it wouldnt have come off, will triple check next time.Glad it was when we just set off or it could have been deathly!! Thankyou for all your replies we will be vigilant now.
