I am going to buy a satellite receiver for use in my caravan. Preferably one that does not require a card. One that is 240 or 12 volts would be ideal, but just 240 will do. Looking at around £50 or less.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

There are several ways to get satellite channels without a card, using a dish and a supplied box.
The most common box is for free to air channels and is supplied with "suitcase sets" from Aldi, Lidl, Netto and Maplin. from about £70.00.
A new arrival is freesat, and can be viewed with a dish and a Freesat SD Digital Box box (Standard Definition) bought separately, about £40.00 or a Freesat HD Digital Box.(High Definition) for £95.00. You will need a HD Tele to get HD pictures.
With free to air channels you cannot get channel 4 or film4.
With Freesat you get all freeview channels and more.
Thanks Turnaround, although I have been using my sky box in my caravan for a couple of years! I have a telly, and an 80cm dish.
All I want are recommendations of makes of boxes that people have used and found to be good value etc!
I'll cross my fingers!

Is there anyone on here who can recommend a digital receiver box that receives freesat or free to air tv channels?
Not a sky digibox, but one that will just receive free channels and does not require the use of a card!
I am not asking about tv reception or dishes, or tv's, just the receiver box!
Thanks in anticipation!
Ps, I have searched this forum.

Jeepster - about Freesat boxes. There are not all that many makes around yet and I can only tell you that we have been happy with Humax Foxsat HD. Don't know anything about other brands (Grundig etc), but so many electronic things are just same manufacturer, different casing. Our Humax cost us around £124 on offer. Not sure whether HD has been worth it - there's not much broadcast yet in HD and the quality of TVs these days is so good anyway. You can get boxes without HD for a good bit less. Grundig box at Comet is £68.50. We can receive freesat and free-to-air, but the latter is only used for Create and Craft by 'her indoors'.
We're going to take the box in the 'van this year to give it a whirl but we'll have to buy a decent dish aerial. The Aldi one was was a failure!
Hi Jeepster
What we have is one of these 12v Freesat £39.99p
Easy to set up as it has it's own sat finder built in and works well for setting up.
Comes with mains adaptor so you're not limited to 12v.
All I can say to people who have problems setting dish up, is slow/small movements work better.
Maplins also have mains only one for £10 less
Enjoy macaw

Thanks Macaw.
I went to my local Maplins store to investigate freesat boxes yesterday, and I recon that that particular box was the one that they had stolen and didn't realise!
I asked the salesman which one should have been in the empty space? He ran off to the managers office and came back and apologised, and said, "It was there earlier, it must have been nicked!"
Well I could always order online! Thanks again.

Are the built in caravan ariels generally rubbish ? Rigged mine up this morning and got rubbish reception (also using signal booster) in our area which is normally brilliant for freeview (using a portable ariel).
Is a sat dish the way to go and are they more effective than the traditional ariel on a large pole ? I just want freeview reception really as my TV has a built in freeview reciever.
I have never managed to get a good picture with an aerial on a camp site. I think this is largely due to the fact that campsites tend to be away from the cities. Conversely I have never had any trouble getting a picture with a satellite, even a small cheap one. The closest I had to a problem is when we were surrounded by trees and I had to clamp the dish to the top of an awning pole. I see the one mentioned at Maplin is the SL25/12. I believe some of these can be patched too. More information about this sort of thing is out in the wonderful world of Google!

if you have good freeview reception from a portable aerial you should get good pictures from a caravan aerial (are you sure there is one on the other end of the lead)
Try tuning your TV it may be tuned to another transmitter.
Regarding sat dishes they will not work with Freeview receivers, this is where a lot of people go wrong.
Freeview is only through an aerial.
Freesat is only through a sat dish and sat receiver
also available as Freesat from Sky but you need a Sky box and card for that.

According to FAQ answer on the Maplin's webste that unit can't get the true Freesat™ transmissions; I think it is only suitable for Sky's freesat not the true Freesat ™, and obviously thousands of other non UK channels.
Are you able to get our Channel 4 and all its siblings; also the Freesat™ EPG, if so then Maplins could have it wrong?
