I'm searching fo new tyres. I'm using a company I've used and trusted with my car tyres for years now - they have come up with MATADOR as a make - I've never heard of them - any one out there know of the make. Fitters reckon they've used them previously - spec is same as the van original Trailermaxx tyres. They're £58 - seems reasonable but then I've not bought van tyres in England for 10 years (- the last ones I had I bought in France.)
CHeers - I had found the thread after I posted. Trailermaxx fiited at the moment but 5 years old this summer. Have seen there are some issues with them as well. From what I can gater elsewhere The Matador problem was a single batch produced 2005 ish. Still not sure - tried another outlet out of curiosity and they reckon they can only get Matador at the moment for caravans.
trailer maxx are made by maxxis they are much better quality than the matadors but they are in massive demand and short supply at the moment and you really are limited if you have the 185 65 14 as there is only matador camac who appear to have gone bust and trailer maxx

Odd you say that - one another forum I was looking at this afternoon a whole bunch of people were saying the opposite. I'm really confused now! BUt as you say there only seems to be two suppliers.
Maxxis main business has always been heavy off road earth moving tyres, the sort of size tyre that would kill you without anything else attached to it!! Given that pedigree you would think any smaller tyre would be made to very reasonable standards, my tyre dealer says he's had no issues with them?
Having said that, the 'budget' tyre market only needs to pass EU safety tests, that's carry the stated load at the stated speed, it takes little or no account of anything else. Put another way, you won't see this type tyre fitted to a new car, simply they would never pass the far more stringent tests car manufactures demand.
So at the end of the day their all reasonably adequate for caravan use but you pays your money and gets what you pay for!!
jaiash you must be looking for 195/70 R14 96S i have these fitted on my caravan and they are Matador Elite 2, they are on there 3rd year there is is no sign of cracks or anthing yet, so i am going to run them this year and then consider changing them, they tell me you can change to 175/75 14 99 the new Elddis Avante 482 as these fitted but they are diffcult to find, or you can change to 185/75 14 102 theres very little difference in the rolling circumference and the load carrying of the 99 is 775kg and the 102 is 850kg the 96s is kg710.
just a thought,as we all are trying to find caravan tyres of recommended sizes as used when first new,and non to be found.has anyone contacted bailey to see if a different size can be used with safety???? i will not buy federal or matador because of bad press and what i have read on here.
tyres i have now as fitted by bailey are TRAILERMAXX.for matador tyres....see
Gary do you still use and recommend the place in Wollaton? Can you remind me of the name again and did you say there's lots of space for them to change caravan wheels. What tyres do you use Gary please? I dont believe in buying cheap for something like this.
Gary - I'm not after cheap I'm after safe! You know where I can get Trailermaxx? - they are what I set out looking for.
MOre confused than ever now - just rung 3 different local fitters and all have said that they class Trailermaxx as budget tyres. They are suggesting Bridgestone or Pirelli trailer tyres with correct ratings.
Thanks Eddie12 - done that - not really any the wiser. Starting to look like Bridgestones as a premium tyre at around £80 a pop or Pirellis at £60 - prices for these seem pretty constant - or Matadors which vary in price quite a bit - £39-£58.
Yes I still recommend him, I've just rang and he can get 195/70x14 from Federal or Matador at £39 and £46 respectively, if that's what you want?
What he can also get is a few Firestone 185/75 8ply with a 102 load index for £56.50 fitted and balanced, same rolling diameter and a decent brand of course.
Theres also another in this size, what he said might be called upper class budget! and their a little cheaper, ring him on 0115 9281249 his names Ben.
If you go for the 8ply then tyre pressure will be different, see here for correct pressures
Just to complete this, I've rang Bailey and they have no issues fitting the alternate tyre, however they have Trailermax through your local Bailey dealer at £85.07 each!!!
hi gary dont want to argue but just to point it out matador are standard fit on vw polos and some golfs
hankook are always worth a look at highly recommend these ford standard on cars and vans
maxxis are on some renault vans only problem i have with maxxis is they have suddenly decided they are a mid range tyre and are trying to promote them selves as such i am a maxxis center of excellence basically i fit a few of them so have inside info in to there advertising
