got the call probably all owners of older vans dread today.our beloved eldiss has been condemned.while its structuraly sound and doesnt leak,it has electrical issues and the hob has a leak.have been quoted 600 pounds to rectify the faults which is more than we paid for the van and also money we dont have.so sadly its going up for sale as a spares or repair project and all our holidays booked or otherwise this year are now scrapped.havent told the kids yet,we will get around to this before we're due to go away at the end of the month.

its not the end however we are hoping to have a van for the start of next season and carry on where we left off.

Seems an heck of a lot of money? what are they saying is wrong with it exactly? electrical issues??? the hob has a leak??? not very descriptive to warrant the alleged cost

A second opinion is in order me thinks!

I would be inclined to buy an electrical hook-up designed for tent use and a portable gas cooker, but I suppose that still wouldn't give you the use of your fridge...I hope you can find some way around this. I hate to think of the kids missing out on their holiday.

Good luck, and I really hope it workd out for you.

You could buy an electric cooler box.  We have one for the tent - not as big as a fridge but big enough for the essentials

I'd also get a second opinion....

Good luck - hope you find a way of getting your holidays this year.

Second hand cooker, about £50. A few quid on wire and the van could be rewired. You would just need your work to be checked out by a dealer afterwards. The only thing that could be expensive is the trip switch. I would get a second opinion, and then consider doing it myself.

I think to sucessfully own an older 'van you need to be able to diy. Most of the work required takes time not cost & paying for the time of a caravan workshop is hardly worth it on a 'van that is only worth a few £100s.

I have to say the caravan as described by the op could be fixed for not a great deal of money by a competant diy'er.

Even if you cant sort out the hob unit it could always be disconnected and the gas pipe capped off then use a bbq for your cooking as for the wiring surely it doesnt need a complete rewire whats wrong with the wiring?never say die until the wheels stop rolling

All I can think about is kids missing their holidays!

To be honest, hob leaks are generally on the taps and vigorously working said taps 20 times each cures leaks 99 times out of a 100.

What your doing is using a little friction to create the slightest bit of heat which warms the grease and reseals the tap, this works on fridge gas taps as well !

Another reason is using to much pressure to test old taps, their simply not designed to take the 150mb of todays systems and should be tested at only 45mb or they all 'leak'     If that's the case I'd be billing them for the damage caused!!

Even if there is a leak that won't respond, five taps takes 2 hours tops to service and thats not a deal, or a replacement is around £50 second hand.

As for the electrics, if this is the mains side I'd get a local electrician to check it. I've been in plenty of old vans and found faults but not anything that takes days to fix?!

thanks for all the advice folks cheered me up a bit.going to get a sparky to give the problem wiring a once over.the problem appears to be that the wires are just old and one wire is running to close to a gas pipe which i imagine should be easy to mget rerouted.as for the hob il try the idea above but if goosed theres one on ebay at present whic is almost identical to mine.so from the doom and gloom yesterday i have a glimmer of hope.however if the sparky backs up the claim that all the wiring is beyond repair then we will accept the decision.

thanks again though to everyone it was appreciated

I would definately get a second opinion.  I find it hard to believe it would need a complete re-wire rather than a few tweeks.  Does anyone know why a cable running close to a gas pipe would cause any issues?

It's a precaution - keep them apart so that in the (admittedly) unlikey event of a gas leak and spark from a dodgy wire happening at the same time, the two would be too far apart to cause an explosion.  I know it seems unlikely, but it's called risk assessment - it's unlikely the event will happen, but the consequences could be potentially very serious if it did, so the risk is deemed to be high, and steps must therefore be taken to reduce it - separating the gas pipe and electric cable removes the risk.

Totaly agree with the thought re the safety aspect side of things but this can never be acchived with 2/3 way appliances ie. fridges or heating units so i cant see how the daeler can condem wiring because it lays close to a gas pipe also how can the wiring be 'just old' on a caravan thats around ten years old  does that mean the wiring on a ten year old car should be replaced also ??? i'm more inclined to think this place likes to find work ... and they car mecanics rip people off !!!

If you lived closer to me my hubby just said he would have had a look at it for you and done any jobs it needed.

He is a VERY handy man and there is noting he cannot do. lease don't give up on it yet like others have said there is always a way to fix things.

I wouldnt give up on it yet, there cannot be but a few meters of cable in a van, even if you had to replace it all it would only be a few pounds, time is the major cost I would be doing it my self as long as the chassis and brakes are ok you can manage with 12volt lighting and barbie sooner than get rid while you sort it, good luck.
